A useful feature, or just a waste of time ?? by
Dave (from the UK)
I've been working on extending the open-source database 'Scid'
http://scid.sourceforge.net/
I've set up a new project on Sourceforge. Someone else wanted to add a
feature to this. I have some serious concerns this is a bit of a toy and
of little practical use. He says it is "very useful" - my own opinion is
a bit different.
Just interested in what others think.

Bluetooth by
mathmo
Umakant Sharma was found cheating by using a bluetooth device, though I
can't seem to read anywhere exactly how did he do it? All I know was
that it was hidden in his cap, but how could that help? You can't read
what is in your cap? Ohh... remember now something about it being
pulled down over his ears, was that how he was hearing the instructions
for his moves? He had it in his ear, but it was...

Dirty stuff from Nolan, Vaughn and Brock by
samsloan
They're trying to invalidate my election petition by forcing me to show
the names of the people who signed my petition. That's dirty tactic
from them. Why should I tell them who signed my petition? It's none of
their business.

yahoo2pgn - a linux shell script for converting Yahoo! Chess files to pgn by
primitiveworker@gmail.com
I started playing Yahoo! Chess because it's easy to get a game started
in my timezone. I like to let Fritz analyze my games, but the Yahoo!
Chess file format cannot be read by ChessBase programs. So I wrote
this little shell script to do it for me.
Works on SuSE linux. Should work on any GNU linux. Doesn't work on
OSX because of the BSD subsystem's strange 'date'.
Please pass this along or...

My friend Don Schultz is running for the board again by
samsloan
I'll do everything I can to help my friend Don Schultz in this
election. He's been my loyal friend for many decades. Anytime I needed
confidential information, Don was always there to provide it for me.
Don and I will be on the same slate along with 2 more people from Leroy
Dubeck team. Please vote for us. We must defeat the Polgar machine.
Thank you.

Features added to Scid by
pascal
Hi,
I added some features, which I find useful to Scid :
- play against an opponent with an estimated ELO strength;
- analysis of a game in order to find blunders
this can be found at
http://prolinux.free.fr/scid/
(with a link to a manual explaining the use of these functions)

"I Sincerely Apologize" by
mea305
Dear Group:
Having just recently found and read my first message about finding an
appropriate chess game, I took note of several responses, specifically
dealing with requesting someone to send me a private e-mail. I
understand, now, the problem; therefore, I will cease and desist. Prior
to reading this today, I had no idea of its implications nor did I
understand that it violates the appropriate...

Why does Mike Nolan defend Polgar? by
samsloan
That's a complete fabrication of what happened, Sam.
Don, Beatriz, Tim and I were there on Monday, we all went out to dinner
at a local Italian restaurant. (Al Lawrence was at that dinner, too.)
Paul and Susan didn't get there until some time around noon on Tuesday.

'Non-Real-Time' Computer Chess Game by
mea305
A relatively new subscriber to this group, I am hoping that this is the
most correct medium to which I can post this request, or inquiry.
Both my brother and I are avid chess players; however, due to
restraints such as time, circumstance and location, we are not always
in a position to play. Because my brother is employed with NASA, he is
extremely busy (albeit that he plays any games, such as...

Measuring engine strength by
Dave (from the UK)
I'd like to estimate the playing strength of Phalanx
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phalanx
on some of its weaker settings. There is a parameter one can set between
0 and 100 which sets its strength. I've not looked at the docs
carefully, but I believe the strength should be independent of CPU time
- it will just take longer to move on slower hardware.
Is there any logical way of testing...

The deadline has passed by

It's after midnight and no proposal from the AF4C. That means that
they're out and I will entertain bids from interested parties. We don't
need any stinking AF4C or Erik Anderson. Larry Cohen is my answer.
