First computer-related question by
Ange1o DePa1ma
When I fire up (to use a Steve Lopez term) Shredder 7 under ChessBase my
analysis looks like this:
Analysis by Shredder 7:
1. (-0.30): 17...Nf4 18.Re1 Qg5 19.Qc3 Nh3+ 20.Kf1 c5 21.Rxe8+
2. = (-0.20): 17...Qf6 18.Nc4 Qf4 19.Ne3 Qd6 20.Nc4 Qf4 21.Ne3 Qd6 22.Nc4
Qf4 23.Ne3
3. = (-0.20): 17...Qd6 18.Nc4 Qf4 19.Ne3 Qd6 20.Nc4 Qf4 21.Ne3 Qd6 22.Nc4

ChessBase 9 and database quality by
Tom Williams
I'm trying to create a database in CB9 that will only include games that
really matter; i.e. strong games.
A major challenge is the lack of ELO ratings for computers, and all games
before about 1975.
What is the BEST way to assign reasonably accurate ratings to computers and
any games before 1975?
I know that Fritz has a way to assign ratings to a database, but I

Don Schultz tries to blame others by
Ray Gordon
Why wasn't the website content position opened for the public? This is
about the USCF, a member organization of 83,000 members, not the Don
Schultz and company club. It should have been opened to the public. You
blew it again Schultzy!
What does it say about the Shahades and their ethics? Chess ****
Shahade is willing to allow her brother to resign from his EB position,
affecting 83,000 members...

Why is poker getting so much attention and not chess? by
Ray Gordon
Statement by Greg Shahade on his resignation from the USCF Executive
Board
It is with regret that I find myself forced to resign from the
Executive Board. According to the USCF bylaws it is impossible for an
immediate family member of a EB member to have a paid position within
the USCF. In the midst of the Chess Life interviews and hiring decision
made by the EB (of which I wasn't a part of...

New system - dual-core processor?? by
RocketMan
It's time for me to upgrade to a new system. I was hoping to get some
advice from fellow chess enthusiasts.
My main question is whether I should go with one of the new dual-core
processors, or would I be better to stay with the faster (clock speed)
single core processors?
Do the dual-core processor 'behave' like two separate CPUs? I do not
currently own (or plan on purchasing) any of the...

COMPUTERS MAKE OLD CHESS OBSOLETE?? by
David Richerby

Not really. They mainly represent a certain ability to calculate
deeply, guided by a few heuristics about what is and is not a good
position. Botvinnik was trying to produce a knowledge-based chess
computer but Hans Berliner...

Chessmaster personalities by
Buller
The README file mentions that the indicated strength ratings were determined
on a certain reference machine. Apparently they are not adjusted on the
user's machine based on the processor speed using the logarithmic formula,
as past Chessmasters, at least 8000, did. Any ideas about how fast that
reference machine processor speed was?

capture search depth by
Buller
To those with knowledge of chess programming - how many plies of capture
(quiescence?) search are included beyond the stated ply? I assume it varies
greatly between typical middle game positions and simple endgame positions.
