Chessbase 8: Reorder game moves? by Jonathan Lonsdale
I've been creating a database of the 'complete games' that form the basis of an opening repertoire book. In collating the games out reference databases I've noticed that the author has varied the opening moves in order for the games to conform to the repertoire or introduce variations. Therefore I've needed to reorder the moves to match the book. Does Chessbase 8 have any facility for this? I...

Polgar DVD by Angelo DePalma
I just got Vol. 2 of Susan Polgar's instructional DVD. It's very basic, for players under about 1500. Decent content but too rudimentary for me. Plus the production is just so-so. Nice video of Susan but the side-by-side demo board is horrible. It's about twice as high as it is wide. The CB multimedia products are of much higher production quality. Does anyone want to buy it from me?

Fidelity all day game, Power outage ends game... by Chuck
Oh what a great game, and I enjoyed every bit of it. I held my own, played a great game, no blunders. Facing a computer set on its strongest setting that in its day had been rated as 2150, and being a 1650 player, I knew my only chance would be to pull as many teeth out of the Fidelity's superior tactical abilty, and try to take away its ability to outwit me, and that's what I did. I went on...

Chessmaster 6000 and XP by Eric Freeman
Hey all, Been out of chess for a while and decided to load CM6k on my new puter (running XP) and it doesn't work (even downloaded the patch). There's no menu bar across the top and after my first move, the computer moves and the program locks up. Is there a fix for this, or should I get the latest version? Thanks in advance,

America is TOO CHEAP to produce a world chess championship by Ray Gordon
It's true. Most wouldn't even bother training for it without some type of funding, but since I forge ahead without it, let me say it again: If ALL of my training is not paid for along the way, and I wind up in a position to play for *any* world championship in chess, I will refuse to play the match, and will also refuse any attempts to pay me at that point. I post this because I want to take...

The joy of just playing 1 game all day... by Chuck
This weekend I will have the house all to myself, and all week I have been looking forward to the joy of being able to play my old Fidelity Designer 2100 Model 6103 chess computer in an all day no time limit game. Over the many years I've owned this great little machine, and out of the hundreds of games I've played against it, I have only managed to beat it 2 times in legal play, and 3 other...

Ultra Strong Free Chess program by Pallav Nawani
Hi all, Fabien Letouzey has released the latest version of his GPL chess program, fruit 2.1. Preliminary testing shows that Fruit2.1 is stronger than Fritz 8!! Of all the commercial programs, only Shredder 9 (and maybe shredder 8) seems to be stronger than Fruit. Of course, more testing is required, but it is likely that fruit will hold its place. At any rate, fruit 2.1 is still very strong....

Endgame analysis beyond tablebases by David Richerby
There's an interesting article at Chess Cafe on computer analysis beyond what is currently possible with tablebases. http://www.chesscafe.com/mueller/mueller.htm (which will soon be consigned to the archives at http://www.chesscafe.com/text/mueller50.pdf -- why does Chess Cafe archive in PDF instead of HTML?)

Update for Byte Chess 0.5 by I Forget
I've made some additions to the short text file that goes with Byte Chess 0.5, plus a 'diff' list of changes from the version I originally distributed. Some of the changes may already be in the copy you have. In fact, it's extremely likely the important ones already are. The rest are just corrections to some comments. Byte Chess 0.5 in Pascal, from 1978 can be downloaded from he

Computer Analysis by Alan Beck
At one time years ago I had a site bookmarked where one could enter positions for analysis done by a very large computer. After some time away from the game I'm now back and was trying to relocate the site. Does anyone out there know of such a site featuring a large computer that will offer free analysis on-line? I realize that with the advent of good commercial software like Fritz that such a...
