Using Crafty to Opening and Ending training? by
WRobinson
Hi!
Is it possible to use Crafty as a "chess coach"? I wanna learn some
openings and must do a lot of drills on endings, and was wondering if
Crafty can be used to that.
I'm using Linux, and my version of wine is somewhat old, so Bookup or
CBLight are not an option...
TIA

Bit Error Rate vs Solving Chess via Computer by
laocmo@copper.net
I have learned, after considerable study in the field of digital data
transmission via fiber optics, that no matter how fast, how strong, how
robust, an electronic device can become, the quantum laws of physics
require that an occasional 1 in a digital logic process will show up as
a 0. I think this might be a proof that chess will never be solved by a
computer. Anyone out there wanna argue the...

What Deep Blue showed was that chess is not a game of true intelligence by
TheUnknownOne
Otherwise a machine would not have been able to defeat a human.
Machines are superior to humans in many tasks including chess but not in
tasks where
true creative intelligence is required.
Therefore, chess is not a sign of intelligence but rather an indicator of
possessing certain abilities like memory,
logical or cause and effect thinking; both of which a machine excels at; a
human, however, is...

Chess opening e-books by
Gilles Roy
Has anybody here subcribed to the services at
http://www.chesspublishing.com?
I was thinking of purchasing a subscription. What do you think of it?
Are their e-books any good?
It also seems that you need special software to see the ebooks they
provide. Can you download the ebooks and still use them if you don't renew?

How does CMX ratings compare vs. human (across-the-board-opponents.) by
Len
Is there an accepted formula for translating ChessMaster 10 rating into
human rating? At this point in time it is not convenient for me to seek out
face-to-face human appointments. But I am interested in how well I would
fair against rated players based on how well I am doing against CMX

If you are serious about learning the openings... by
John J.
I highly recommend 'Chess Position Trainer' !! It's a fairly new program and
it's slicker than snot! I've been discovering its features tonight and have
been amazed at what it can do.
Oh, one more thing. It's FREE !!!!! Yep, you heard right. It's FREE!!! You
don't have to troll the Internet for any 'cracks' or bootleg copies....
It's also an excellent tool to study tactics..
Find it here..

Need advice on investing in a computer and chess engine. by
warehouse
Is a multiprocesser computer - and which one - with Super Fritz or
Super Junior that much more powerful than a regular PC with the latest
Fritz or other program? If not, then what combination of PC and chess
engine would be most worthwhile to invest in. I'm currently using a two
year old Fritz 8 program with a bottom of the line Dell Dimension 2350
three years old. Would be grateful for help in...

handheld chess computer by
Angelo DePalma
I'm looking for a handheld, dedicated chess computer. My preferred features:
1. great screen/presentation
2. playing strength
3. ability to save games
I already have a PocketPC but I hate the way it croaks if it's not
constantly recharged.
Suggestions?

GET $50,000 in 4-5 MONTHS!
The Oprah Winfrey Show and investigative program 20/20 recently devoted a whole segment on this program to see if it really can make people money and was legal.
Parents of 15 year old find $71,000 hidden in his closet!

Longest Possible Chess game by
Guy Macon
(This came out of an ongoing discussion about whether
playing chess shows intelligence, with a comparison of
Nalimov Tablebase lookups and the Chinese Room thought
experiment.)
Note to the non-chess-player: a "ply" is a black move or
a white move. Cheesplayers call ten black 'moves' and ten
white 'moves' ten moves/twenty plies. "FIDE" is the
international chess federation. A "3 man...

Which is stronger, Chess Master 10 or 4 Fritz 4.01 by
Len
Can someone tell me which is stronger, ChessMaster 10 or Fritz 4.01, which
comes with ChessBase Light (and by about how much)? Of course they will
always be able to kick my butt from here to tomorrow, but since I am using
both for analysis, I am curious.
Thanks

Engine books by
Ruud
Does anyone have any experience with adding together different engine-books?
Does it improve the engine-performance in any way or change the way it
behaves?
I like to know this.
Thanks in advance,

Byte Chess 0.5 finally available. From Byte Magazine 1978 by
I Forget
To those of you not old enough to remember, Peter Frey and Larry Atkin
(co-author of Chess 2.x, 3.x and 4.x) published a chess program written in
Pascal, in the Byte Magazine in 1978 and 1979.
After all these years, it's finally been put into electronic form and made
available.
It's a classic chess program, just like Sargon. Although Chess05 was based
on a mainframe chess program, rather than...

Which Chess Program? Fritz 8, Hiarcs 9, etc... by
Jonathan Lonsdale
Time to trade in my ancient Fritz 5.32! I'm looking for a new program to
analyse my games and do training against. Is there much between the various
engines that ChessBase offer? It seems I can get Fritz 8 for £20 off Amazon
while the others are closer to £40 off specialist chess vendors.
Am I right in thinking the interface all offer the same functionality
offered by the Fritz 8...
