Anyone tried CB9 on Linux and WINE yet? by Kevin Croxen
I've been running CB7 with Fritz 7 as the analysis module for quite some time on Slackware Linux using the WINE API. The results have been quite satisfactory, generally better than they ever were for me running CB on actual Windows. Anybody tried running CB9 yet on WINE? I'm becoming interested in upgrading, but not to the extent of setting up a permanent Windows machine for it.

The the whole presentation then immediately shuts down. The computer is a recently purchased Dell wit XP and the programs have been patched. CB, are you there? Any...

Actual Perft results from SMIRF by Reinhard Scharnagl
More than a year ago I have posted Smirf's early Perft results for the standard 8x8 chess opening position. Smirf today is able to play Chess960 and several 10x8 chess variants based on Capablancas extended piece set. To those, who are interested in performance tests results here are Smirf's actual values coming from a system with Win-XP Pro, Intel P4, 2.8 GHz: FEN:...

Hi Chess960 friends, again I point to the fine PDF document from the Frankfurt Chess Tigers. You can find and download the PDF document (in German language) from the very interesting Chess Tigers' home site at: http://www.chesstigers.de/download.php] ( please search there for the link: Chess960 Startpositionen und Regeln ). 'How to Reassess Your Chess'. (Silman) by John J.
As I posted above, I've been out of serious chess for 20 years. I read the article on Chessville: http://www.chessville.com/instruction/instr_gen_path_to_improve.htm and it certainly had some good suggestions. One book in the second grouping they suggest studying is How to Reassess Your Chess. I found it at Border's book store along with its companion workbook. Has anyone stdied this book and...

Cool. Won a small tournament tonight! by John J.
It's Friday, tax day, so I head out to my new found Chess club in Orlando. They had an unrated tournament tonight with mostly kids playing, some with 'C' class ratings. It was 10 min games and the last round was 15min time limit. Still stunned I did so well as fast Chess used to be my Achilles heel. I admitted my last USCF rating was like 1580 17 years ago so they put me on board 1. Got lucky and...

Creating a non-existing database through Perl (continued) by beatnik
Yes but actually "nikos_db" would be the first database in existance. There is no other database created before it. My aproiach so far was to create that database "nikos_db" from console *manually* othewise i was getting an error. On the other hand if the database existed then it could conenct to it first and then delete it? But what about the first time that need to be created?

Wow! Back to chess after almost a 20 year hiatus! by John J.
Group: The improvements in chess software is mind bogling! I just purchased Fritz 8 Deluxe at the local games store for only $29.95 and was so surprised at the number of features, not to mention its strength. It is the solution to my former worse problem - openings... Now I can practice any time.....

Fritz6 and deep analysis by Ray Johnstone
I routinely put my games into Fritz6 for "deep analysis". Until recently one comment was "last book move" which seemed pretty accurate, but this no longer appears. I assume this has something to do with the tab "reference DB" under "full analsis" but how do I restore it? / spam=ray www.iinet.com.au/~ray

CB 9 Tip of the Day by Angelo De Pa1ma
Here's a handy little tip for using CB 9's super new "file view" function. Let's say you click on a folder and the computer's hard disk starts spinning out of control and CPU usage spikes up to 80% and everything else on your computer is frozen. (This happened to me today). What you do is press control-alt-delete and a little box comes up which allows you to close unresponsive programs....
