Fritz 5.32 Playing Strength by Dan-the-K
I'd like to adjust playing strength in Fritz 5.32 closer to my level, about 1100. How do I do it? I use Fritz 5-32.eng in various chessbase user interfaces, including Fritz itself, Junior and Hiarcs. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust playing strength in these routines. The only *.exe file is Fritz32.exe, which is the Fritz interface itself. There is a file called F5.INI, which...

Fritz v5 - Can I set up an end geme for the program to solve? by mr
I want to be able to check (and/or solve) newspaper chess puzzles with Fritz (version 5). I cannot find any reference to this kind of capability in the help pages provided. I would like to be able to place a few pieces on the board, say who's turn it is and set the progarm to start solving it. Can anyone tell me if Fritz v5 can do this? Thanks,

chess PGN videos by Mike Leahy
Learn how to search your PGN files and contrast the games with opening theory. I put two new Flash videos at http://www.bookup.com/chessvids1.htm The second video shows how to load a game from a PGN file and compare it to a Bookup ebook on that opening. The videos and program are free. The program has more features when registered, and the registered features are free for 30 days.

checking for legal moves by Felix Dorner
Hi, somehow I got the idea to write a chess program. The first idea was to write just a client for a chess server. Now i am thinking about the fastest way to check if a given input move is legal or not. Lets say i have just an 8x8 byte array to encode the current position. The following must now be assured:

How do ELO ratings compare with Percentiles? by Rudy Lopez
I know even as I am asking the question that it is flawed. But lets say you play Blitz games on ICC, is there anyway to figure out how you are doing compared to the rest of the pool percentile-wise?

electronic chess board by chessisbest
I'd like to get an electronic chess board that will do the following: 1) Record a game (while NOT connected to a PC) while I play an over the board game with another human opponent. 2) Then later provide a way to feed that game into my PC in pgn format. Thats it! I don't need it to do anything else but if it does that's fine too. The less expensive the better. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Fritz 6 database corruption by Mark
Help! I've been using Fritz 6 for a couple of months and had ~ 60 personal games saved in the autosave.cbh database. I just deleted a single game, did a "tools | cleanup database " from the menu, and was left with only 19 games! Before I quit the program (and so have any changes committed to disk) can anyone suggest a way to reclaim the missing games?

GTChess freeware chess program by Henry Eck
http://www.computerchess.us/gtchess/ I've posted the program as .exe and .jar files. It requires Java 1.4 to run. It's 100% freeware. The web page also includes links to the Red Cross and other Tsunami relief organizations.

How good is the Sierra Sphynx? by grandmastermars
I'm curious about a chess computer ive seen in a shop in my town. (Its a Sierra Sphynx - or Sphinx Sierra) It must be a pretty old model because i havent found it on the internet. I dont think it can be too strong, but as i said, i ve become very curious. Is it just a toy for children, or can it play a decent game? Does anyone have an idea what its (approximate) elo rating is? grandmastermars

Mac G5 on ICC with Fixation by Henri H. Arsenault
Having wasted a couple of hours to find this out, here is some info that may be useful to Mac users who have difficulty getting on ICC with Fixation. I had not been on ICC for a while with my Mac (I also have a PC that uses Blitzin), but when I tried to get on with my Mac G5, I could not log in using Fixation 2.1.1 (nothing happened when I clicked on the connect button). I could log in with...

Chessmaster 7000 Question by RickH
I am trying to install Chessmaster 7000 on a Dell computer with an XP operating system. The problem is that when I try to pull down the menu bars, at the top of the screen, I get an error message which says that "Chessmaster 7000.exe has experienced a problem and will shut down". Then the Microsoft dialog box appears and suggests that I send the error report. After I either send or don't send...

How do the chess engines think by Richard Anderson
Hello, i am starting to learn and play chess more extensiveely. What i dont understand about chess engines is how and on what criteria they calculate how they are going to move! I mean if computer plays first white and has no opening books how it will decide what to move first!?!? which knight first? which pawn first and 1 or too squares front? and most important why? thank you!

Fritz help by Martin
I just got and started using Deep Fritz 8 and have some questions. I've played a few games online as well as against the program. How do I get Fritz to start calculating an Elo rating based on my games (both online and against the computer)? I played a few games online as "guest". I'd like to remove these games from the database as they were games against other "guest" players. I can't...

CM9000 1.02a NO-CD patch? by Betsy Schwartz
Does anyone know if there is a separate NO-CD patch for Chessmaster 9000 version 1.02a? It looks like 1.02a fixes a couple of minor bugs. (I have a complete, legal, registered copy of CM9k, I just like having the no-cd patch) Thanks, Betsy
