question about PDA - which one? by Kerry Liles
Looking for recommendations for a PDA that can play Chess Tiger (or anything better) and is not just an organizer... If I am going to haul something around it should also have the ability to do some work: read pdfs, play mp3s, take notes, the usual PIM stuff. Dont care if it can work on MS office stuff like Word docs or Excel sheets, but I suppose that might be handy. Not necessary for it to have...

Shredder 9 UCI available now! by Enrico Carrisco
Hello everyone. I was quite surprised to see Shredder 9 UCI already available for purchase and download immediately. It's nice to see authors _directly_ marketing their work and receiving more of the benefit (they deserve.) The offical information is below... -elc. ---

Palm III - (Was: Any Handheld unit with tactical drills) by ryeung@earthlink.net
I've a Palm III, and am wondering if I can revive it as a chess game machine. I'm at the moment reluctant to buy another Palm (as my Palm III my wife bought me a few years back costed us $300+ already). Assuming a Palm III, 1=2E Would I be able to load games/puzzles for study (where can I find free-download materials)? 2=2E One notable problem with Palm III is its battery life. How do

Shredder 9 news link inside-clarifications by HD
skydiver wrote: wrote in message ... http://www.shredderchess.com/news.html The multiple releases of Shredder 9 (both scheduled for February 10) have caused much confusion, and here are some unofficial clarifications. It's difficult to decide which version to buy, so maybe this will help.

4 of my games: please tell me how to improve by Sky Walker
hello all, I am posting 4 of my games here. None of the are of good quality as i am a beginner player and is still learning this great game. I would really appreciate it if some kind souls can spend some of their time in looking at my games and tell me where i can improve. I am not really talking about the tactical mistakes here, as i can get them with Junior 9 - but about technique and style...

Crafty 64 bit by Steve
Hi! Sorry, I have a really stupid question due to my lack of understanding. Do I need a 64 bit OS get better performance compiling crafty as a 64 bit app? Or if I use something like RH9 Shrike, can I install crafty w/the basic compiler (gcc) to execute the 64 bit instructions?

Yace's slow book moves in xboard by marko
I'm using Yace & xboard in linux. I'll use command line switches of xboard to start a match between Yace and Crafty and Yace takes almost a minute a move (in a 10 min time control) in the openings even though its making moves that are clearly in its opening book. Crafty, on the other hand, instantly makes it book moves and the clock quickly whiles down for Yace and puts it at a disadvantage...

Anything better than Excalibur Grandmaster? by Sergey134063877
Hi, I am looking for a chess computer -- not a software but a computer with an actual board and pieces. Somebody recommended Excalibur Grandmaster that supposedly has a maximum rating of 2200. Is there any other (cheaper?) model by maybe some other manufacturer that would be comparable to Excalibur Grandmaster? I would really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks,

Sigma Chess opening question by Wojtek
Is there a way to make Sigma Chess 6.1.1 (Mac OS9.1) open with a move other than 1.d4 when it uses the training library? Upon "Go" it ponders the first move, instead of playing a random opening, and then always chooses 1.d2-d4 Wojtek

Contempt value - I'm confused by DamirCo
From Fritz 8 Help File (Engine parameters): I marked uncertain words with uppercase. Which one of those two is actually POSITIVE, and which is NEGATIVE? It's obviously mistake in writing, but I'm still uncertain what is what... TIA ---------------------------------------- Contempt value: A very strong program can sometimes trick itself into a draw by showing too much respect for the opponent. On...

arena: game between two engines by marko
I'm an Arena newbie and I'd like to get two engines to play against each other, but not in a tournament necessarily. I have two engines selected but I have no idea how to make the playing start. Using the 'start' command for an engine merely re-loads the engine. If I used the Move Now (Ctrl-Z) command to get White to move, then Black never gets around to moving. I suppose I can use Tournament...

where - Computer can' play chess article by Shipov by keithnospam@gosfordchess.com
Yeas ago I read an online article, perhaps at Kasparov chess, about computers not being reliable at analysing some positions - such as a bunch of light-squared bishops and not recognising it as a draw. And various other examples. Can anyone point me the way where I could find this - I would be most grateful ! ! thanks

Using CB9 from Fritz 8 by Mallwyd
I recently purchased CB9 and assume it should integrate with Fritz8, i.e. File/Go to chessbase, should open CB9 and the CB9 should be the database not the reduced version in Fritz. When I use File/goto CB, nothing happens and I cannot locate a setting to connect the two. I am able to get to fritz from CB. Am I completely off track? Thanks,
