Looking for s/w advice for endgames by anon
Hi, I class myself as a keen *beginner*. I'm rated ~ 1400 on ICC after ~ 10 standard games. (No idea how that translates into real life rating). I'd like to study endgames and so I'm looking for some advice on software options. I've got Fritz 6. Is it better to purchase Fritz 8 or Bookup Express? If I understand correctly, both provide endgame training features. Or is there something better?...

How to open a game at a specific position in Chess Assistant 7.1 by Robert Pawlak
If you are asking if you can open each game at move X, then the answer is no. There is a new CA support forum starting. Right now, it is only accessible through Chessplanet: http://www.russianchessclub.com/program_eng.html Eventually this page will be available directly through your web browser. There are only a few posts at the moment, but there should be more to come. Bob Pawlak (remove...

Computer Chess Game produces a paranormal experience? by Few Good Chessmen
I came across this article recently. Richard Moody Jr. of Berne, NY if you are reading this could you post the game (surely a game of such experience you must have its record still)? Those with Chess Playing Programming know-how might want to check this out at http://www.100megsfree4.com/farshores/03rm1.htm which gives the following (just for the record)... PARA NEWS :. COMPUTER CHESS GAME...

Which was the greatest game of all time? by Chuck
What chess game do you consider to have been the greatest chess game ever played? Please comment why. Mine has always been "The game of the century" played between Donald Byrne and 13-year old Bobby Fischer in the Rosenwald Memorial Tournament in New York City on October 17, 1956. It was nicknamed "The Game of the Century" by Hans Kmoch in Chess Review. It is just unreal to think Fischer was...

Tournament mode in Junior 8 by Adrian MacNair
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me: I know how to use the engine tournament mode in Junior 8, but it seems to randomize the selected engines for matches instead of allowing me to select the matches I want. Say I have 8 UCI engines and I want to play a Knockout tournament:

Best Palm chess program? by de
Can somebody please give advice on the best Palm chess program? Should I get ChessGenius or HIARCS? It's a present, I don't really play chess. Personally, I like ChessGenius much better because of its user interface. It's easy to toggle board size, it has coordinates, looks better (HIARCS only offers bright pastel colors for the dark fields, they do not look good at all with a Sony Clie TJ35...

Weak playing engine under Shredder 7 by Angelo DePalma
After wasting a lot of time looking for a reliably weak engine that might work under Shredder 7 I finally just went back to the CB website and found one, checked its prowess on another site, and installed it. You programmers: Bless your souls, but please have mercy on us non-technical people. If you want us to use and distribute your excellent products you should provide a bit of guidance as to...

Filtering Doubles in Chess Base 9 and 8 by Kevin L. Bachler
In the past I have been happy with The Ultimate Game Collection, but recently picked up version 5 and the amount of doubles was much higher than my past experience. I was disappointed. I tried to filter this with both CB 8 and CB 9, but they actually killed the games with more header information, even though I told each to keep the game with more header info. Has anyone else run into this?

Changing MyInternetGames file to PGN format instead of CBH by teferet@hotmail.com
I want to change the MyInternetGames file from PGN to CBH. This is the file that autosaves games played on the Playchess server. The reason I want to do this is so that it can be used as a "Watch File" by Bookup or Chess Position Trainer. I know I can cut and paste those games into a PGN file but I want to automate the process. Is there a way to change the database path and type in the program?...

Repetition and 5 moves by Simon Krahnke
It's time my lame engine learns how to detect draws that are not stalemates. 50 Move Rule: That's 100 plies, that are not pawn moves or captures, right? So I just check if board.halfmoveClock = 100 and return DRAW. Any off-by-one-error? Repetition: That's the same position for the third time, right? So I keep a history of hashes, and search it each node for 2 hits.
