Jose Chess Puzzle by
I.J Jordan
Hi All
I am using Mac OS 10.3 and have downloaded and installed Jose Chess version
1.3.3.Everything seems to be working fine and I like what I see but I do have
an unusual problem that hopefully another Mac user has encountered or someone
can help out with a possable solution or workaround
The problem is the programme will not close with the normal "file/quit"
option and the only way I can shut...

Fritz9 by
SethB
I forget how long Fritz8 has been out, but it seems like it has been
awhile, and improvements must have been engineered in the meantime. Has
anyone heard of plans for ChessBase to release a new generation of Fritz,
or that Fritz9 is in any advanced stage of development or beta-testing?

Tablebase: Show Mate in Notation Window by
Hasnor Lot
While studying endgame position below:
White: King on d5, two Pawns on a5 and c6
Black: King on c8, Pawn on a6
I fired up Infinite Analysis function in Deep Fritz 8. Having Prof. Hyatt's
tablebase, Deep Fritz 9 quickly shows in the Main Engine pane:
1. +- (#16): 1.Kc4
2. +- (#16): 1.Kd4

FRITZ 8 -- Adjusting its strength to its opponent by
Bob Fairbank
I've had FRITZ 8 for several months and been playing it in "Sparring"
and "Friend" modes. When I first
started (after dumbing it down to my rating) I would win more games than
I lost. Now I find myself losing more games than I win.
Does FRITZ "learn" my playing style and adjust its accordingly at these
levels (I assumed that if it did this it would only do so on
non-handicaped levels), or am I...

Newbie Chessmaster 9000 - skill levels by
admiral_victory@iol.ie
I have just bought the above and , as I haven't played chess for
decades , I would like to know how to adjust the difficulty levels of
this programme so that I might win the odd game when playing against
it.
I have read the manual or help file but it still seems to play away
beyond my skills - perhaps I'm missing something or perhaps it is just
impossible to get as low in ability as I am !!
No...

Tactics study: good book or software? by
Fr@nk
I've decided I need to really immerse myself on intense tactics study. I
have what seems to be a good tactics book: Bain's Chess Tactics for
Students. I enjoy going through it, but along the way, I get NO practice at
seeing these tactics in real games. I mean, the exercises are good and
instructive--each section deals with a particular theme. I just don't have
an intelligent approach to applying...

K+Q v. K+R by
Eamon Warnock
A Luddite friend of mine - who knows nothing about databases, much less
tablebases - believes that he could not fail to mate any silicon-based
intelligence within 50 moves, with K+Q v. K+R.
I know that the longest shortest mate is 35 moves. IMO, this makes it
far from a trivial exercise to mate within 50. The longest I can find
without the MegaBase DVD is 31. Does anybody have a FEN of the...

Problems with Pocket Fritz 2 and online database. by
Dr. David Kirkby
I have Pocket Fritz 2, along with service pack 2, installed on an HP
iPAQ 4150. Formally I could search the online database for games
between specific players and to search to the current position in the
database. The former still works, but I can no longer search for any
position in the chessbase database. Now I keep HTML getting errors
when I try to seach for the current position, such...

a one-ply quiescence search by
pd42
An observation from my program (no quiescence search yet) is that the
successive iterative deepening scores are +/-/+/-/+ etc. This is
obviously caused by the fact that the last move in the pv is usually a
capture (the horizon effect: the program captures because it can't see
the consequence).
This leads to the following thought for quiesence search
implementation:
If and only if the last...

Database pocket pc - position searchable - available? by
sam
Hi
Is there a chess database program for the pocket pc that allows games to be
loaded in via pgn that has the
facility for the user to search by position?
Pocket fritz allows connnection to online database but i am thinking of
offline.
It may have a search facility for local games but not by position.
