Pairing progs by
Anders Lang
I need help finding a good pairing program handling fide-swiss with or
without modifications. It must be fully windows compatible i.e. user
configurable with regards to printing fonts, different codepages etc. It
also must support different types of tie-breaking systems (Bucholtz,
progress, lot etc.).
If there is anyone out there who knows of a good program please let me know.

Help !! font problem in CB8 by
Gilles Garrigues
I use ChessBase 8 under Win98 without any problem. I just bought a new
computer running under WinXP and installed CB8 with all the fonts ...
But I am having the following problem : if now I want to insert a
diagram in the notation (text after move/ctrl + D) the familiar "knight
in a square" icon does not appear ; instead I have in the comment window
a "z" with a small "v" on top (ž ; looks like...

Shredder Bug by
drummerman
In playing against Shredder8, I traded down to a Knight and King
versus Knight and King ending. Shredder kept playing on for eight more
moves until it asked for a draw. Has anyone else had this experience?

Transposition tables2 by
Tommy
I have also noticed that if I load a mate in 7 puzzle and then solve it in a
few minutes, then start a new game a play it all, then I load the mate in 7
puzzle again, the chess program still remembers the solution (from the TT)
and plays the correct move immediately.... I thought that with always
replace, after more than a billion nodes (on a much smaller TT) the TT would
not be able to retain...

Adjustment for Fritz 5.32 by
Alexander Erlich
Hello!
I like playing against Fritz, but I always lose ;-) My Fritz programm has
imho two scrollbars which are important for his strength: one is strength in
Elo and the other is mistake-tolerance. If I set. last one on e.g. 4 or 5 (I
usually play with 0.5), it is not fun to play because Fritz doesn't avoid
material loss.
Which is a good value for this mistake-tolerance so that I can play...

Fritz 8 and Windows XP Professional by
Pappu Murthy
Recently I tried to install and run Fritz 8 on my PC which has Windows
XP Professional OS.
For some reason it keeps freezing as soon as I try to run.
The installation went smooth and all. No problems there.
Wonder whether Fritz 8 works on Windows XP Pro at all.
Previously i was running it under Windows XP Home successfully and never
had any problems.
Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

using Bookup to monitor new opening developments by
Douglas L Stewart
I own Bookup Professional. I've read through the Bookup website a number of
times and I've been through some of the online help, and I'm still not quite
following how to monitor developments in my opening repertoire. Right now I
just use Bookup to key in my opening reptertoire - using the training
feature occasionally.
Here's what I tried:
* I grabbed a copy of TWIC as a PGN
* I created a...

Use of databases when on ICC by
Dr. David Kirkby
When playing on ICC, one is not allowed to use a computer or databases
unless one has a computer account (C). I respect that, and don't
cheat.
However, I do wonder if it would help players develop if they could
opt for a 'semi-assisted' game, where books could be used.
And perhaps another where books + computer databases, could be used,
but **not** calculating engines (crafty for example)....

How to compile Crafty (Win32) by
WebWalker
The makefile has changed in the Crafty's recent version.
Can someone please post the instruction to compile Crafty in MS Visual
C++ 6 ?
I have no problem of compiling the Crafty v19.10 but not the version
19.11 and 19.12. The instruction (as below) posted by Simon is no longer
working :-
Well if you have nmake and Visual C++ it is pretty easy.

avoiding human strengths? by
Bob Jenkins
I hear that good human chess players have hundreds or thousands of
situations that they have studied. When they see a board close to
them, they coax the game into the situation they understand then rely
on their understanding of that situation. And computers can't play
that way because it's too expensive for them to classify the
situations. If that's all correct, then it would be to a...

CFP: Octi Tournament Computer Olympiad by
Mark Winands
OCTI
Challenger: Donald Green
OCTI is a simple, yet deep game of strategy designed to give humans an edge
over computers. The basic premise of the game is that players build their
pieces as they play. On each turn, a player must decide whether to move a
piece, improve a piece, or add a new piece to the board. This simple
framework creates an extraordinary array of strategic options and plays...
