amount of memory needed? by Buller
Can anyone give me some typical numbers for how much RAM a modern chess engine uses (not including the the amount used for the program code itself and the amount used for hash tables, which I realize is often made as large as the computer will tolerate)? I suppose the amount could be all over the map, but I'm curious about how much more modern engines use than something like my old Fidelity...

USCF Members by Sex and Age by samsloan
Mike Nolan has posted extremely interesting data about USCF Members by sex and age. Thank you Mike Nolan. USCF members by sex shows what many chess teachers have observed, which is that among elementary school children, the girls are nearly as interested in chess as the boys, but as the girls grow older they lose interest quickly and almost all of them stop playing. USCF members by age shows...

HOT NEWS: Gregory Alexander has been logging in as Bill Goichberg for at least one month by samsloan
HOT NEWS: Gregory Alexander has been logging in as Bill Goichberg for at least one month This has come out in the debates now taking place on the USCF Issues Forum. Gregory Alexander has been behaving strangely all along, for example screaming shrilly when Brian Mottershead went into his newly created account after Gregory had complained about some problems with that account of which Brian...

Computer Science Experts: Chess 'harder' than Go by raylopez99
In an article in Science, 14 September 2007 p. 1519, written by the Chinook team that weakly solved the game of checkers (draughts), it's asserted essentially that chess is harder than Go. What is meant is that the "decision complexity" of chess (and checkers) is higher than for Go (actually Go-Moku was mentioned, which is not exactly the same as Go, but I take it the analogy holds for Go),...

What will Sam Sloan do to improve chess? by Kenneth Sloan

Paul Truong is the Fake Sam Sloan by samsloan
I did not put that particular allegation in the complaint, that a certain board member knew about, approved of and perhaps even paid for the obscene postings by the Fake Sam Sloan because I cannot prove that. I confined my complaint to things I can prove. I left out things that I possibly cannot prove. Fortunately, there are more enough things in the complaint that I can prove to give me a solid...

Settlement Proposals by samsloan
Post #75595 refers to my statement, "I think you guys are really stupid", which was in response to the motion that was one vote away from passing that the US Championship tournament be canceled and replaced with a match between the champion and a challenger. That was not a false statement. It was a true statement. They were stupid. The USCF was formed in 1939 for the purpose of holding a...

Engine Test Position by Martin Brown
I ran into an interesting position having just won the exchange where material balance against positional factors meant that the right thing to do was to immediately swap my rook back for a bishop and pawn. I didn't play this and ended up in a blocked pawn ending RRB vs BBR and a draw. Analysing it on various engines afterwards shows the extent to which different engines factor in material vs...

CB9 by SBD
I'm finding CB9 to be very hard to use, probably because the logic doesn't seem to match older CBs - and possibly I don't have enough computer for it. A very irritating problem is that it continually accesses big99 as the "read database" whenever I enter a position. In the old CB, you would set a "read database" - I can't find this option. No matter whether I set the board up in big2006 or any...

How the Mottershead Report became public by samsloan
by Brian Mottershead on Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:16 am #76279 What Sam Sloan says is basically correct. I was asked by Bill Hall to prepare a report for him and the EB. I did, and I put it up password- protected on my private web site and sent the seven board members plus Hall usernames and passwords so they could access it. I also gave usernames and passwords to Brian Lafferty, who asked for a copy...

Polgar Wars: Polgar Group Declares Victory by samsloan
I find it amazing when those who are a queen down in the endgame claim that they are winning when the rest of the world can see that they are losing. Remember, during the Invasion of Iraq there was this official Iraq government spokesman dubbed by the press as "Baghdad Bob" who daily showed up for his TV interview in which he would claim that the American forces were being decimated, driven...
