5 second delay setting in Chess Assistant and Shredder 6 by
chessplayer
I need to practice using a 5 second time delay for playing in USCF
over the board games. I do not need 5 seconds for each move added to
my existing time, but rather a staightforward delay of 5 seconds
before my clock starts ticking down. (The Chronos manual calls this
"Andante Mode".) I tried setting up games using this delay in both
Chess Assistant and Shredder, but have not been able to get...

setting game result in SCID by
Gregory Topov
If I've entered a game in SCID, how do I set the game result? I've been
entering a correspondence game I've been playing, and now that the game is
finally done, I can't figure out how to edit the headers to set the game
result. I'm sure it's something obvious, but I can't find it.... thanks in
advance.

endgame tablebases - future? by

Depends how long Moore's law holds, really. If CPUs keep doubling in
speed every eighteen months and storage (both RAM and disc) keep up their
similar performance (ISTR they've been doubling in capacity every year for
a while, though I don't...

Practice tactics on a PDA? by
Fr@nk
Hello. I use ChessTiger on my Palm PDA, and it does a good job. Flexible,
way too strong for me at most of its levels, and lets you play through
games; even shows its analysis while replaying previous games. But it
doesn't have a real "teaching" mode that lets you practice tactics (or even
particular openings). Is there any program for the Palm that lets you
practice tactics (and/or...

Computers and chess motivation by
Mike Murray
In the new (Winter, 2004) Chess Life, Larry Evans writes, "... why
would anyone devote a lifetime to mastering a game from which it is
almost impossible to earn a living if a hand-held device can find the
best move in a split second?"
(This was in response to a reader's comment that asking the computers
versus humans question is "equivalent to asking if a fork lift could
beat a weightlifter or...

Question about Playchess.com rating categories... by
Bobby C.
This is probably (scratch probably) a stupid question. The help file for
Fritz 8 says that bullet games are 3 minutes or less and blitz games are 15
minutes or less. Whenever I click on a game in the challenge window that is
rated 3 minutes only, it shows the rating change for my blitz rating. Which
one it the true level for bullet games?

Fritz 8 GUI - Using stored params in eng. tournament by
Derek Wildstar
Hi gents, I've hit a wall...
In the creation of a Frtiz 8 tournament, engine invites only, you can set
each engines individual parameters and save them. So far, I have done this,
setting each engine's paramters individually.
Yet, when the tournament starts, I have no indication but plenty of
contra-indication, that those saved parameters are not being loaded, instead
the default parameters are...

A new extensive chess programming tutorial by
Spur
Hello all,
I began publishing a new chess programming tutorial. It
follows my pet project of developing a chess playing agent
from scratch. The tutorial is released in stages, as soon
as I complete parts of the program. Each release includes
a new chapter of the tutorial (in PDF form) and all the
code for that release. The whole thing is free, of course,
including the code which is licensed with...

SCID - scid.eco file? by
Gregory Topov
When I load SCID, the welcome window gives the message:
"Trying to load the ECO openings file...
Unable to open the ECO file: C:/Games/Scid/bin/scid.eco"
Am I missing a file? (it's not in that folder) Or is this a separate
download? Obviously it has to do with the opening book I imagine. Any tips
appreciated.

Program teaching Chess by
Alexander Erlich
Hi!
I've discovered Chess for myself, and now I try to lean to play it properly.
But honestly, I don't like those books with the instructions where to set
the figures. I prefer the computer to set them for me ;-) So is there
perhaps a program or at least a way where I can learn to play with my
computer? Fritz ist certainly a good way, and it has a great database (about
300.000 parties in my 5.32...
