Shredder 8 or Fritz 8 by
Robert Smith
I'm really confused, chessbase website says,
"Original Fritz interface: Included in the Shredder 8 pack age is the latest
Fritz interface with extensive training and entertainment features for
beginners, club players and grandmasters. It
also gives you full and free access to the ChessBase Playchess server (1
year), where you can play games against people all over the world. Naturally

Playchess.com and Linux? by
Ralph Jones
I don't suppose there's a Linux client available to play chess on
Playchess.com?
Or does the Chessbase client happen to work with Wine?

problems with CB 8 by
Henk van Weersel
dear newsgroup,
Installing CB 8 on windows XP dit not cause any problems. However when i
installed the dutch update my toolbar screen messed up. Deleting and
reinstaling gave the same problem.. Under windows 98 such problems did not
occure.
Is this a known problem ? and is there a solution fore it.
I want the update because it has better possibilities to interfere with
Fritz 8.
Greetings Henk...

FICS Clients by
Ralph Jones
Perhaps I'm spoiled because I use the Chessbase interface a lot to play
online. However lately I've been experimenting with clients to play on
FICS and ICC.
I've found some outstanding clients when it comes to functionality and
performance (I'm becoming partial to Arena). However I've noticed that
most require a text interface, where you're typing a lot of commands.
Some do seem to add a few...

Chessmaster 10k? by
JesperN
Just a little curious here. Anyone who has a resonable estimate on a
release date for chessmaster 10k. Since I have done everything there
is to do in 9000 I'm in need of a new version, when do you think we
can expect it? John Merlino, would you like to share a few facts, of
all in here you must know most about it?

Problem with Windows XP and chess fonts. by
FredH
Greetings.
I am running into serious problems with corruption of chess diagrams in
existing MS Word documents, after my computer has been upgraded from Windows
98 to Windows XP.
I am aware of known issues, also solutions to some, but not all, of these
issues. I would like to correspond with someone who has expertise in this
area. We can discuss it here, or through private corrspondence.

CM9000: Turn off tutorial voice? by
Jet Jaguar
In CM9000, is there a way to turn off the voice in the tutorials? I
have all the sound options turned off but the voice still reads the
text. I find it distracting and I prefer to read the directions
myself.

Batch EPD copy as RTF by
Amerzone
I am aware that EPD2Diag can copy the contents of a line (string) in an EPD
file to the clipboard as RTF, and then with a simple paste in Notepad I can
get the characters for the fonts used to represent the chess board. But this
works with one line only, so I have to repeat for each diagram (each line)
in the EPD file to get all the diagrams. Is there any tool that can do this
in batch? I've...

3-move repetition and FEN notation by
Spur
FEN notation is supposed to represent a game state fully. It does
represent castling permissions, enpassant, 50-move draw. But it
doesn't represent 3-move repetition draw. How come ?
Given some position in FEN notation, there's no way to know whether
we're in the middle of a 3-move repetition, so FEN doesn't fully
represent a position. Or am I misunderstanding something ?

Chessbase Playchess rank and chatting by
joe mccarron
Watching the Linares event on the Chessbase server I was dismayed to
find that, if you want to say somethign you need to have some sort of
rank. The rankings show that I am a Bishop but evidently this isn't
high enough to allow me to say anything in that "community." I tried
to find out what I need "to become a rook" but I can't seem to find
anythign clear on this. Does anyone know if there...

Fritz8 repetoire by
jlaz461
I would like to know if it is possible to set Fritz8 up to play only
user defined openings. For instance, I want to have Fritz play only a
certain variation of Caro-Kahn as black and only a certain variation
of Queens pawn opening as white. If this is possible, can anyone
explain how? Can this be accomplished with CM8000 too? Thanks!

Lasker predicted computer chess? by

I came across this apropos quote in _Lasker's_Manual_of_Chess_ and havn't found
any references to it on the net:
"A spirit with a large and roomy brain who without error could keep in

Crafty Engine Param: Asymmetric Evaluation by
Derek Wildstar
As I understand this parameter, Asymmetric Evaluation is the methodology of
scoring/evaluating the major categories (Pawn Structure, Passed Pawns,
Material. etc.) differently for the side to move.
As it pertains to engine matches, with no need to change sides during a
game, is Asymmetric Evaluation a desirable feature?

Avoid Mike Leahy and his garbage software by
newsgroup_mail
Bookup is real crap and the worst part is that if this jackass Leahy gets
your email address, you will continue to get junk email for months......not
just from him, but he gives it to third parties as well. I made the mistake
of giving him one of my good email addresses that I never got any junk mail
in ever, and all of the sudden, i'm getting a bunch of junk mail including
his repeated...

Wide screen Notebook and Fritz or CB8 by
Ron London
Has anyone used Fritz or Chessbase with one of the new notebook computers
with a Wide screen? Does the whole screen get used, or do you have black
lines on the sides, and does the wider than normal screen allow more windows
inside Fritz?
Thx, Ron
