Fritz 8, analysis and medals by
Marco
According to the instruction booklet ("manual" is too big a word) for
Fritz 8, when this program analyses a chess game it should assign a
number of "medals", according to different features of the game.
However, the only "medals" I have seen assigned so far are the black
one (blunder) and the red one (brilliant move). What about the others,
like strategy, tactics, etc? Even when I analyse some...

Weak Engine by
drummerman
Has anyone tried the new Sjeng 12.13 engine available from Chessbase?
When used in Fritz8, it reminds me of the crappy early 1980's programs
that threw away pieces and made inexplicable moves. Is my experience
with this download unique or have other players had a similar
experience?

Move 27 a blunder?? by
Chuck in Minot
Just wondering if move 27. Qd5-e5+ in the following game is a blunder?
Testing a beta for a group of friends working on their own program. Rebel
12 is closing in for the mate and Buster b1.03 (c)2004 MDU Math, plays this
move that gets a worthless check and looks to just throw away its queen.
With the inpending mate was this a move that I just don't understand or
can't see the logic in, or is it...

Fritz 8 Sparring Setting ? by
drummerman
Do the Fritz 8 Sparring settings (normal, harder, etc) apply when
using other engines? For example, if you load and use Crafty, does the
Sparring setting work the same way it does with Fritz? It seems to me
that when using Crafty, with the Sparring setting set on Harder, the
program doesn't make an occasional mistake like it does when using the
Fritz engine.

Fritz species... by
Stefek Borkowski
Hello,
Can someone tell me the basic difference between Fritz8 species, so to say.
I have Fritz8, lately have gotten my hands on DeepFritz8, and I have heard
of X3D Fritz which played a few weeks ago with Kasparov. I wonder which kind
of chess software is in your opinion the top one.
Regards,
Stefek

On 6-men tablebases by
Mikko Nummelin
Frequently it is noted that having 6-men Nalimov tablebases is
problematic, both because it takes an enormous time to create them and
also because they are huge, some of them even multiple gigabytes each. I
think I have a proposed solution to the second problem, i.e. the size but
not to the first (enormous time to create): "Leapbases" or "skipbases".
As far as I know, Nalimov tablebases do store...

Looking for a chess program by
Ian Cummings
Hi all,
I'm looking for a computer chess program.
Must be easy to use (preferably Windows, but a graphical DOS game would
be fine) and not be too good ! This is probably a strange requirement,
but it's for my 9-year-old who's showing an interest, and it'd be nice
if she could win now and again without my help :)
Also, modest hardware requirements. I've got a copy of Pawnchess, which

Playing Strength by
Seeker3333361465
I got chessmaster 9k + Fritz 8
I understand the machine can't play full power unless U give it 2 hours 2 make
40 moves
I only give it + me 15 minutes , + I set it at 2400 , my guess is cause of
the time limit it only playing bout 1300 U need 2 give it bout 3 minutes 2
make a move 4 it to play at full strength , correct ?
on Chessmaster 9k if U set it at 2400 even w/3 minutes per move it...

My Bishops are Wizards and when they kill they throw fire balls..

Pandolfini and rating by
henri Arsenault
In this week's column on the Chesscafe web site, Bruce Pandolfini
replies to a question about rating by saying that US ratings are about
equivalent to FIDE raitings.
For over 30 years, I have been reading that US ratings are about 100
points lower than FIDE ratings. Has something changed? Is Pandolfini
right? And if US ratings are lower, why is that? I remember back in the
old days the US...
