Hash Table and Quiescence Search by Jih-tung Pai
I wonder if there is conclusion or consensus on whether to store quiescence search results in hash table. What are the advantages and disadvantages? If I choose to store the results, is it better to store in the same hash table as regular one or I should have separate one? And reasons for that? Thanks in advance!

Relative strength of best programs at chess/Chinese chess/go by Chris Lawrence
On Fri, 11 Jul 2003, Neil Fernandez wrote: How would people rate the relative strengths of the best programs at chess, Chinese chess, and go? I realise that it's not a straightforward task to find a basis for comparison (including because the processing power made available to chess programs when playing Kramnik and Kasparov has not been made available to Chinese chess and go...

Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 by Thomas T. Veldhouse
Will Shredder 7 take advantage of hyperthreading on enabled Pentium 4 systems? How about the tripple brain function, will it use hyperthreading? Thanks in advance, Tom Veldhouse

FICS - Unable to Connect by dan foley
I have been trying all day to connect to FICS and keep getting a message "Connection Refused = Please try again later". I have sometimes not been able to get onto FICS, but have never gotten this particular error message. Is anyone else getting this, and could it have anything to do with my new Norton Internet Security Software? (JUst installed yesterday) Thanks

Chessmaster 9000 and Win 2000 Pro ? by admiral_victory@iol.ie
I am new to chess NG's so please excuse me if this question has been asked before . I intend to d/l and buy Chessmaster 9000 but notice it states on the Website I was looking at that W2K " ...is not supported..." I am wondering whether this advice is now out of date as W2K , although initally not great with games , has now improved a lot as far as that goes.

Small world!! by FirebrandX
Hey I did the cover art on that book! As with any artist, I wished I could have gone back and applied some changes and improvements (new wood textures), but I'm getting better with each new cover. You should see the cover I recently finished for chess book on position tranformations! Even Dr. Nunn was quite thrilled with my work on that one! They have me doing harder and harder covers now....

Generating tablebases, is it worth the trouble? by Marcel Alsemgeest
I'm thinking of generating 5-piece tablebases, but that will take quite some time even on my fairly powerfull machine. So i wonder if it is really worth the trouble. My main reason would be to let my pc play more effective against other pc's, but will that indeed be the case when I use tablebases, or isn't there much difference noticable? Marcel

tablebases by Leonardo Ljubicic
Hi, I'm using Schredder7 and am wondering how to activate the tablebases that came on the CD with the program? Probably there's a some kind of setup, then you have to tell the program where they are?! Anyone have a couple of minutes to explain? Thanks. Leonardo

Search extensions and transposition tables by Delphi
Hi! I'm planning to add transposition tables holding the usual values, bounds and computed depth information of a position into my simple chess program. As I use a simple search extension concerning checks (adding 1 ply when a check occurs), I have a problem to understand how the depth information in the TT could be used in such a case. If I encounter a position where the hashprobe succeeds and...

Security advisory for Crafty 19.3 by Anders Thulin
Odd -- I haven't seen a security advisory for computer chess programs before, but someone seems to have taken the trouble to go through Crafty 19.3 carefully. It doesn't appear to be a very critical problem, though, unless someone runs Crafty with suid/sgid bits (or equivalent) set. See: http://www.secunia.com/advisories/9577/ for whatever info there is out right now.

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess CD by Art Lane
I came across this game at a local used computer dealer. It is dated 1994, and comes on CD. The back of the package mentions BOOKUP. Anyone still have this laying around? Any opinions on it? I did not purchase it (yet). I've got Fritz 8 and CM7000/5500, as well as a bunch of freeware engines, so I suspect a nearly 10-year old chess engine won't compare favourably, but was wondering if anyone...
