Roycroft-Guy-Blandford Code by
JMR
In the article http://www.chessbaseusa.com/T-NOTES/011401.htm
I have now red that : "Roycroft was also one of the inventors of a special
form of chess notation, called the Roycroft-Guy-Blandford Code (or RGB Code,
for short). This code is used automatically in ChessBase 8 whenever you
enter a board position and save it into a database. If you don't enter a
name for the Black player, a bunch of...

Fritz 8 - friend mode by
Alexander Fischer
Hi,
a brief question: how long will Fritz8 think when playing in friend mode?
To me, it would be logical that the program thinks as long as required in
order to make a move on my handicap level. However, it seems to me, that the
LAST setting before switching to friend mode is taken - it makes a
difference if I had "long game" before or "Blitz game".
Is the quality of the moves different if the...

Fritz 7: How to let engine play a Setup Position by
John Cordes

I would like a setup position of an endgame be finished by "engine

engine", but it will start a new game. Not my setup position game.
Has anybody an idea on how to do this?
Thanx,

Maxed out CPU usage when running Hiarcs 8 by
c4b4e4
Why would the CPU usage always show 100% when playing against or analyzing
with H8? I have set the hashtables down to 65MB (so as to play blitz), but
it runs 100% all the time. The hard drive makes alot of noise during it's
usage-- soon as I close it, the HD quietens back down to normal. Strange.

Is there a table of number of iterations for each tablebase?
The number of iterations needed is the number of maximum mate length (or
mated length). Those lengths can be found in rather small "tbs" files

Incorrect PGN headers ?? by
Mr. Plow
I downloaded the .pgn file of Reinfeld's 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate
from U Pitt with the idea of copying it to my PocketPC and working on the
problems with CEBoard..
The .pgn file copied okay, and there are 1001 games (or positions, I guess)
listed, but whenever I click on one I get an "Unable to load game" error,
with a big red x saying "incorrect pgn header."
Is it possible to correct...

64 bit computer chess program? by
raylopez99
From the NY Times tech section today. I wonder whether there will be a
64 bit chess playing program soon--with 64 squares, you can have one
bit per square and really do some fast assembly language type
programming.
RL
"But beyond the predictable costs and performance benefits, if 64-bit
computing follows the PC's historical patterns, this migration may
bring a surprise or two.

The chessbase site states that a graphics accelerator is necessary to
view the 3D board in Fritz 8. Is it really needed? I have a Pentium

FPGA will blow away all other computers by
Paul
Have you guys checked out the FPGA chess playing computers? They are
in their infancy and already Brutus is destroying grandmasters (cf.
ChessBase). For next year they're talking about 6 million
positions/sec and almost unlimited chess knowledge!!? In 2 years
nobody--software nor human--will be able to beat FPGA in a match or
tournament. Quote me on that!

Good move ordering? by
Delphi
Hello!
I am writing a (simple) chess program and I think it is rather slow,
i.e. it would not search very deep (only a few plies) in a short
period of time. I thought one reason might be a poor move ordering (I
use alpha-beta with iterativ deepening).
So I read some posts in this group to get informations how to make it
faster.
Robert Hyatt suggested to test the move order quality by computing...

Tungsten T2 or HP 1940. Which is better just for playing chess? by
Pete Fakus
Hello,
I am thinking already for weaks which PDA I am going
to buy. Main purpose is to play chess. On the road, on my couch
and at th park. I am a round-about-1700-player.
Important is IMHO a very good display. Therefore I put the both
in the shortlist. They have great displays. I think that the T2
has a superior display because of the higher resolution on less space.
How looks i.e. Chess Genius...

Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess - s/w problem by
Andy
Anyone had any problems running Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess on Windows 98 ?
It crashes my PC after running for say 20mins.
It might be to do with the sound or graphics as these both sometimes appear
slightly distorted.
Any ideas ?
