Real ELO by

Gentlemen!
I am looking for a way to define real power of the chess engine on
my PC. Probably, there are test positions allowing to calculate Real
ELO (engine tournaments, I think, calculate relative power).
May be you know properly places?
There is no "real" Elo. Elo is defined as strenght relative to others in

Chess viewers for the Web by
Alessandro Nazzani
Hi all.
I'm building a new web site for my chess club and we are going to store
games and problems in a database.
I have built a few ASP pages that grab info from the database and activate a
viewer with the corresponding game.
So far, I experimented with MyChessViewer and ChessTutor.

Uninstall Fritz 6 by
abcedminded

Subject: Uninstall Fritz 6
A workaround could be to reinstall Fritz 6, use the add/remove option, to
uninstall it. The Fritz 6 folder that is left behind can be deleted,
because there might only be an ini-file in it or something.

Tidying up my drives, I noticed that Fritz 6 is
still sitting there (I'm using Fritz 8 now) but
I can't find an uninstall feature. I understand
that Windows shares files all over the place
so I don't just want to blow the folder away.
I'm using XP by the way.

Castling bug in Chessmaster 9000 tablebases? by
Peter Bereolos
I think I may have found a bug in the CM9000 tablebases. I've patched CM9000
to version 1.0.2 and regenerated the tablebases with FEG 3.03c. I have found
problems in positions where White can castle like
W: Ke1 Ra1 Rh2 B: Ke8 .Here, every legal move for White will win,
but when I go under Mentor/Chess Coach, it only reports mate in # for king moves,
moves by Ra1 and 0-0-0. For moves by Rh2...

Majestic Chess - I love it! by
John Merlino
Anthony PDC antdeclan_at_hotmail.com wrote in message ...
Hallo all.
I bought Majestic Chess the other day and I must say it's dead
brilliant - especially in Adventure mode: witty, involving,
challenging, educational. Lots of thought has gone into it, and
there's much to explore and LEARN, in an absorbing, wonderfully cool
graphical...

Junior 8 --- incredible moves! by
c4b4e4
J8 must have some kind of specialized knowledge when evaluating moves,
because so far I am very impressed with it's play!!
Examples:
I was playing white against it in a KIA (5' + 10") and on the 11th move, it
played Ke7, foregoing K-side castling!!
None of the others I have (Hiarcs 8, Shredder 7, Fritz 8) chose this.

Fast InCheck function by
Delphi
Hi!
I realized that the InCheck function of my chess programm is a bottleneck.
While the tablebased movegeneration seems fast enough, and also MakeMove is
acceptable, InCheck is really slow. Currently I do MakeMove and check the
legality by InCheck. Looking one ply deeper and getting the information
about illegal positions by generating all moves and recognizing a king
capture didn't really show...

Please, help me! by

Hi!
I wrote a simple Checkers program (I know it's not chess, but I believe you
can help me anyway) and I wish to improve it. I've found a
webpage(http://www.seanet.com/~brucemo/topics/hashing.htm) about
transposition table, but I don't understand few things, especially this:
'The hash array is indexed via a ZobristKey. You take the key for the
position, modulo it by the number of elements in...

ply depth by
Leonardo Ljubicic
I would like to comment on a relative ability of newer vs. older chess
software to spot the key moves in acceptable time frame.
I recall my Saitek Simultano on 120/40 levels, it would think for a couple
of minutes, being sure of the response found so far, then on depth of 3 it
would come up with something dramatically "improved". Seeing this, I would
think, hey, this is not such a bad chess...

checkmate analysis by

i am writing an graphical user interface for chess using OpenGl. I
need to also validate the moves of the players as the interface should
be usable across a network.
The problem arises when i try to identify the cases when a checkmate
or a stalemate position. i have no better idea than computing all
possible next moves and finding that they are invalid. This is a too
big a task to perform after...

Wanted: Tournament Grading Calculator Program by
Curtist Thetford
If you are resonably competent with Access, I put together an Access
database last year for our club that will calculate ratings using the method
given in USCF's scholastic chess manual. I don't know how "user friendly"
it is since I just put it together for my use, but if you're interested,
e-mail me and I'll send you a copy of th DB. It basically allows you to
input games one at a time but...

Can Chessbase "bookmark" games like SCID can? by

I love SCID's ability to bookmark games for further review later on. You
open a database and choose a game and setup a position from it. Then if
you want, you can "bookmark" the game so that the next time you open
your computer the position gets...
