Fritz 7 by
Photon
Hello all...
I recently aquired CheesBase's Fritz7 CD from a deceased relative. I
am not that great at chess, but find the program pretty cool. I dont
have any documentation, so i have a couple questions here...
1. It seems buggy. Program has crashed a few times, and also doesnt
save my board settings about 25% of the time. Is there any patches or
upgrades i can install?

I have these two programs installed on two computers connected in

I do it?

Tablebases and the rule of 50 moves by
JMR
In the posiotion 8/1k6/8/3KB1N1/8/8/5n2/8 w - - 0 1 The Tablebases annouce
correctly mate in 85 moves. But strangely they stop to work after 50 moves
certainly because of the rule of the 50 moves. To have the end one's have to
copy the position in anoter board, finish it and then cut and paste.
It think it's strage !

If you're interested in online chess check out FICS (Free Internet
Chess Server). Their site has links to free client software, Winboard
seems to be the most popular. It takes a little while to set up, but it's
great fun and you can't beat free!

CM9K sacs material for position: an example game by
Wilma
I've heard it said by more than one commentator that computers are too
heavily biased by material to sacrifice it for positional advantages that
have no immediate tactical payoff. It puzzles me when they say that because
I've seen CM9K do it quite often. Here's an example (also attached). The
program sacs one pawn and later offers more. The later ones may be tactical,
but the pawn I took on my...

Large Chess Variants and Type 1 hash table collisions by
John Weathers
Hello,
I did a search on this group for information concerning hash tables
keys and collisions, and most people seemed to argue that while a
32-bit key will result in many dangerous type 1 collisions, a 64-bit
key should drive this to an acceptable level of risk.
I am writing a program that will play several variants of the Japanese
game Shogi, an Eastern cousin of chess that is played on a 9x9...

Playchess.com account with Fritz 8 by
Mulaku
It's not too clear to me, when you purchase Fritz 8, the account they
give you on their playchess.com server, is it for one year or for
ever? I couldn't find the exact details on the Chessbase website, can
anybody offer me this info?
Thanks!

tablebases hang Shredder7.04 with XP by

I noticed that Shredder 7.04 UCI takes a long time to load with
Windows XP. I didn't know why, but I do now... Tablebases.
It might be a good idea to check the integrity of your tablebases. A very
simple way to do it is downloading Wilhelm from Rafael Andrist

Fritz8 crashes WindowsXP. Help wanted please. by
Denis Kholodar
Hello,
I bought Fritz8 and ChessBase. I only installed the Fritz8 copy and
decided to play a few blitz games. My new laptop, which otherwise
works fine turned itself off every time I tried (about 7 times during
a few days). I did search this news group, but I didn't find any tips
on what I can try. If you encountered a similar problem and/or know
how to solve it, please share your knowledge...

Hash Table and Quiescence Search by
Jih-tung Pai
I wonder if there is conclusion or consensus on whether to store
quiescence search results in hash table. What are the advantages and
disadvantages? If I choose to store the results, is it better to store
in the same hash table as regular one or I should have separate one?
And reasons for that?
Thanks in advance!

FICS - Unable to Connect by
dan foley
I have been trying all day to connect to FICS and keep getting a
message "Connection Refused = Please try again later". I have
sometimes not been able to get onto FICS, but have never gotten this
particular error message.
Is anyone else getting this, and could it have anything to do with my
new Norton Internet Security Software? (JUst installed yesterday)
Thanks

Chessmaster 9000 and Win 2000 Pro ? by
admiral_victory@iol.ie
I am new to chess NG's so please excuse me if this question has been
asked before .
I intend to d/l and buy Chessmaster 9000 but notice it states on the
Website I was looking at that W2K " ...is not supported..."
I am wondering whether this advice is now out of date as W2K ,
although initally not great with games , has now improved a lot as far
as that goes.
