Crafty Compile Help by Christopher
Hi! I know this probably has sorta been asked before. I hate asking. Here it goes. I cannot compile crafty under Windows XP w/MSVC .NET (or 2K w/MSVC 7) under a particular condition. I am trying to compile it for a multiple processors. I can do it fine for a single processor. I am using the Makefile.nt and it works fine. But I want to compile it with COPTS=/MT /DSMP and it fails. If I...

SSDF Ratings - What's going on? by Fight Cancer
IMO, the SSDF endeavor is awesome. Every time I look at the newest issue or posting, my mind drowns in a sea of questions to which I've never found answers. For any report, be it a scientific experiment or otherwise, it woudl be nice to know how the testing was done. A basic explanation would be nice, and "the more the better." I recently email Mr. Karlsson...

ChessTiger cracked --- the author strikes back? by Christopher
Hey guys/gals, I've read on a couple of messageboards that people who play the cracked version of ChessTiger (illegally pirated and registered) for Palm OS get an unusual problem. The chess engine plays at the difficulty level you set it to for most of the game, but then when you make it to the end of the game (the endgame) the Chess engine automatically resets your difficulty to EASY MODE. So...

linux by floris
an interesting thought just occured to me regarding this issue: since windows takes up a LOT of memory and linux to a much lesser extend (to my knowledge anyway), would a chess engine be better performing on a linux pc than a windows pc? what about apple?? First bitboard chinese chess engine? by Noah Roberts
Forgive my intrusion, but since this is (AFAIK) the first time this has been done I think some of the people in these newsgroups could be interested. There will be no future posts like this as those that are interested can watch the site once they know it exists. I have just placed a pre-alpha version of a bitmap based Chinese Chess engine on http://sourceforge.net/projects/xiangqi-engine . ...

Identify Openings by Ari Makela

Where to find Spoken Annotation by Fight Cancer
My favorite part of the Chessmaster series hsa got to be the "Josh Games" in the Classroom. As a patzer, I find it incredibly easy to follow when someone speaks the moves, variations, and context of the position. Kudos Chessmaster! What other programs offer such simple ways to learn? I'm not looking for mountains of text that show a zillion variations and expect my to just understand why the...

pocket fritz 2.0 by Iain Gourlay
Hi, Does anyone have a reasonable estimate of the playing strength of this thing? I've surfed the web and can only find an unsubstantiated quote estimating its blitz rating at 2450, which is not very revealing! I'm interested in whether I will find it useful as an analysis tool when i cant be bothered to switch on ;-) or dont have access to my pc or laptop. I am a 2300 player (2326 national,...

Problems with Junior8 and Fritz7 programs on my computer. Can anyone help? by Oscarancasey
I have recently bought a new copy of Fritz 7 (american version through Ebay) and a second hand version of Junior 8. They appear to have the same problem. he Junior 8 will use the Junior engine to analyse a position but not a game. when asked to do so it says it it not the right engine cd. I thought I had bought a dodgy copy though it looked genuine but the Fritz 7 has a similar problem. Has...
