Deep Sjeng Opteron Performance Result by
Gian-Carlo Pascutto
I had the opportunity to run some tests on an AMD Opteron machine,
and benchmarked Deep Sjeng on it, compared to the AMD Athlon XP,
and compared to the Intel Pentium 4.
The Opteron is 205% faster than the Intel P4, clock for clock.
The Opteron is 70% faster than the Athlon XP, clock for clock.
It runs Deep Sjeng faster than a (nonexisting) 3.3Ghz
Pentium 4 would.
An 1.6Ghz Opteron runs Deep...

Crafty on Opteron by
Christopher
Hi!
I am preparing to compile crafty on an Opteron AMD board. Could
anyone suggest which OS I could use? I have W2K,XP,Linux RH9. I have
the MSVC++ or I could use gcc for Linux. Is there any significant
difference between which compiler I should use to obtain max
performance?
Also, if I use MSVC++ or gcc which package should I use that would
best support the 64 bit processor? Can I force...

Kasparov refuses to continue Simul game in Chicago! by
Scott
http://www.mrfixitonline.com/readTopic.asp?PostingId=1366118
"Kasparov rather nervously asked me if I had a rating. I replied 2084
and he, not looking very happy, asked why I didn't write it down in
front of the board next to my name. I replied that no one asked me too
and that the Belzberg people knew my rating and only today OK my
playing since I am a client. He then stated that if he had...

Problems with ChessWorkbook program. by
drummerman
After downloading the teaser version of ChessWorkbook's software, I
decided to pay the $29 for the regular version. It's a great concept.
Going over Albert's exercises and playing the positions out against
Crafty. The problem is that in order to activate the download, you
need to insert the 64 digit(!!)
alphanumeric serial number. The number apparently cannot be loaded by
hand (at least after...

Crazy idea for neural net eval function by
Noah Roberts
So the goal is to train the number 1 neural net to become an expert at
making the first move, the number 2 to become the best at the first
response, ...etc
I don't know a lot, but in my opinion this won't work; well it might,
but not the way you want. After a few plies the games become so
different that a ply based network would have to be as general as one
that simply plays from the...

Why analize backwards by
Jim Roe
Ah, yes. I remember the logic of why the analysis starts at the end of the
game:
The computer knows your last move and the question is: was it a good move?
Having solved that problem it moves back one-half move and analyzes that
position and compares its best move to the move made.
And so it goes, moving back one-half move at a time.
CA71 lets you set the depth of the analysis, any where from a...

Please help: Playchess.com/Chessbase + Opening Books by
Dougy
Dear Chessfans,
I've recently been getting into playing chess at playchess.com, and
I can't figure out how to get the opening book working. What i'm
doing at the moment, is opening up a game from the Games tab, and
selecting the Openings Book tab on the new screen. It has one button
on it, Load Book. (it looks for *.ctg files when i click on it) But
I can't find a file that it likes anywhere....

Chest Solving Limitations? by
Anders Thulin
David Hodson wrote:
Does anyone know the problem solving limitations of Chest?
I always thought it pretty infallible until I found a Mate in 18 which
defeated it.
WHat is the problem? Are you sure it indeed is as you describe it:
an eighteen-mover?

Strange behaviour of Fritz in this problem by
JMR
Chess Amateur 1922
Blathy O.T.
Mat in 16 moves
White : King e1 Pawn h2
Black : King c1 Queen a2 Rock d2,b3 Knight e1,b1 Bishop a3, d1 Pawn b2,b4,
c2,c3,c4,c5,d3,e2
So Black as all his pieces and White only the King + one Pawn
The solution is easy to find as Black has always exactly one legal move :

What does CA7 offer that CB8 / Bookup / Blitzin don't? by
Dave
I apologise if this question has been asked before. I've got CB8 + Bookup
Pro + Blitzin. Apart from search speed which I've picked up from a few
reviews and ICC support, what can CA7 do that can't be accomplished by the
other software I've got? The reason I ask is that I've been testing CA6
Light from convekta's website and I love the interface. I'm considering
selling the CB software and...

Gary to Play Again! - "Machine vs. Man: Checkmate" by
Marian Cascaval
I don't get it.
Why have been decided to play with Fritz since it has been outranked
by Shredder 7.04 (in SSDF list) and it seems it will be outranked by
Junior 8 too?
Even if the Morsch team intend to come up with Fritz 9 or something
the Chess Base team would not know how the program will perform
compared to others.

CBF (CBH, PGN) to DBF? by
Damir Ulovec
Hello to everybody.
Is there any program for this?
Or somebody has easyer way... I want to combine two databases into one
(duplicates are already removed with CBDIFF.EXE), but sorted by the year. Number
of records are 357,908 + 450,065 = 807,973
With simple combining I get one database, but it's not sorted. It's simple first
database sorted by the year, then second, also sorted by the year... I...
