Kasparov vs Bareev - 1-0 or 1/2-1/2 ??? by
Dave (from the UK)[_2_]
You can find this French Tarrasch PGN in various places - one of
Chessbase's databases, TWIC, at least one other website etc. But the
result does not match the position.
Kasparov appears to beat Bareev. But whilst I'm not a GM, I am sure I
would have no problems drawing this, so either Bareev run out of time,
the results tag is incorrect, or something else very odd has happened.
Anyone...

Appeal from Decision Suspending Sam Sloan from USCF Issues Forum
I hereby appeal from the two decisions of the Forum Oversight
Committee suspending me from posting to the USCF Issues Forum for one
week each.
I appeal on the following grounds:
1. My posting, which stated that the USCF Executive Director, Bill
Hall, is chronically absent from work is valid commentary. The members

CM 10 by
kuhnfucius
I am working on a Dell Dimension with win XP. I am having difficulty with
the CM 10. It moves the pieces jerky and with some slowness. Also the only
two dimension color options are black and white. The layouts for CM 9 were
much better. I have been to the CM web sight and found no helpful solution.
I am considering uninstalling the program, but before doing so I like to
know if the...

Difference between node and leaf in tree by
Macchess
Dear all,
What is considered a node, and what is considered a leaf in AB search?
Common sense would be that all but the last level where the evaluation
is taking place is considered a node. And the last level, when you do
not search any deeper, is a leaf.
So when to calculcate NPS, you end much less than when calculating leafs.
Secondly, when calculating Quiescence search, is each position...

Win with Damiano's Defense by

Win with Damiano's Defense
I just got back from the US Open where I had a terrible result, my
worst performance in years. It was not that my score was so bad. I
scored 4.5 - 4.5, an even score shared by many strong players. It was
how I achieved that score. I lost three games in a row to players
rated hundreds of points lower than myself. Even the games I won
should not have been won. Polly...

engines' playing style by
DDP3000@gmail.com
I think it would be interesting to see what everyone thinks about:
1) Which engine do you think understands tactical matters the best?
2) And which handles strategy better?
3) Which has the most tactical style? (=chooses tactical moves)
4) The most strategic style? (will go for a long term space advantage
or better structure for example)
5) The engine with the most chess knowledge?
6) The most...

New to Chess software by
David[_2_]
Hi. Have a basic, elementary even, question. Are the Fritz and other
ChessBase software stand alone or do they function in conjunction with
Fritz 10; specifically the *Fritx Trainer* series of software?
Thanks in advance. I've come back to chess after more than five
decades, and it's gratifying to see that I am no longer embarassed at
the level of my chess incompetence. :-)

which aggressive and defensive engine? by
DDP3000@gmail.com
I d like to know which is the most aggressive engine, even if it
sacrifices some strength in order to accomplish that. And it doesnt
have to be in the top 10, just fairly strong. Is it maybe chess tiger
in suicidal mode? Also, the most defensive-solid-boring-to-death?
Any thought would be welcomed.
Thank you.

Capturing Positions from Diagrams by
Azlan
I was wondering if there was an easy way to capture the Forsythe (FEN)
notation of a chess position from a diagram like we often find on the
Net. Most positions are shown in diagram form and the only way I know
to transfer said position to other chess programs is by manually and
tediously setting it up. Anyone know of a simpler way?

Chess (computer) game in movie "Contract" by
George
I just watched the movie "Contract" with Morgan freedman and John
Cusack, and there are two scenes where one of the geeky bad guys is
playing a computer chess game. In the first scene, he sneers that he
never loses, then is checkmated on the next move.
I froze the screen, and set up the game...his move was nothing short
of a colossal blunder.
In the second shot, it is the exact same game, but...

http://www.gambitchess.com/progr.htm
CG3 works fine in WinXP. Notice how strong it is, and how attractive
the interface is. Its style of play is rather intelligent. It is a
quite fast engine which is suitable for analysis. The opening tree
handles transpositions. It is ideal for designing one's own
repertoire. However, I noticed...
