strength of chess computer programs vs. time by
Beliavsky
Deep Fritz defeated Kramnik in a match by 4-2 and plays at least at a
2800 level at classical time controls. Can someone estimate how much
stronger it would be if it had much more thinking time, say 1 day per
move?
I think it would be interesting to have a correspondence computer-
assisted match between two top players. That ought to produce the
highest quality of play.

Vote for Sam Sloan by
Jackass Lafferty
Sam Sloan is the best board member we have. He's honest and he keeps
the crooks on the board straight. He tells things like it is. Vote for
him for 4 more years. We should all stand behind him.

Brian P. Lafferty lacks trustworthiness according to Hal Terrie by
Jackass Lafferty
So now one is not entitled to opinions?
"In my opinion, Mr. Lafferty lacks even the slightest trustworthiness.
I believe the evidence shows that he came into this forum with a chip
on his shoulder, determined to make trouble from the very first day.
He whined and complained - and then threatened - until Bill Hall and
Bill Goichberg folded up like cheap suits. Now we have a massive
moderation...

Brian P. Lafferty lacks honesty according to Steve Owens by
Jackass Lafferty
And, of course, our fine legal mind chooses to ignore the fact that
Mr. Terrie provided plenty of basis for his opinion... That fine legal
mind stated this:
Brian Lafferty wrote:
Without a stated, factual basis the opinion is just a personal
attack.
And that fine legal mind tossed out the below basis:

new Google Group for chess by
Beliavsky
I have created a Google Group called "chesstalk" http://groups.google.com/group/chesstalk
as an alternative to the rec.games.chess.* Usenet newsgroups, because
so much nonsense is posted to those groups. Anyone interested in chess
in invited to join. The list owner (me) will have the power to remove
off-topic messages and expel troublemakers, but in general, I want to
stay out of the way.

Brian P Lafferty defends criminal conducts by the board by
samsloan
Assuming that the ballots were not stolen or given under coercion, I
don't know what can be done, or if anything should be done. If a
person asked another for recommendations to follow and filled them in
verbatim, how would that be materially different from handing the
ballot to that person and saying, "I trust your judgment, fill it in
as you think best."

Randy Hough, Bill Goichberg and Don Schultz committed criminal offense by
Jackass Lafferty
I was at a tournament this week-end when I overheard the following
discussion between Randy Hough (USCF board member) and his assistant
TD.
Apparently Randy had collected 6 or 7 blank ballots from local USCF
members and was in the process of voting for them. He and the
asssitant TD were discussing whether it made sense to cast votes for
Don Schultz with these ballots. I don't know who was...

You might get one out of two, Brian.
Just looking at that sentence, I'd agree. But if you take it in the
context, iyou have to factor in that:
1. Brian volunteers for the FOC.
2. The credentials are discussed, and trustworthiness is mentioned as
a criteria.
3. Sam uses this as an opening to insult Gregory Alexander. That post

Nolan challenges Brian P Lafferty's trustworthiness by
samsloan
The problem is, Brian, that moderators in addition to doing things
like moving posts into or out of the review area and closing threads
also have the ability to edit or delete posts WITHOUT LEAVING ANY
EVIDENCE OF WHAT WAS DONE OR BY WHOM.
For that reason, we have to be VERY selective in appointing
moderators, far more than in appointing members of the FOC. It takes
someone with a blend of...

Shredder Chess for Macs by
CoreyWhite
I was on a hunt for the best chess software out there. I read that
Fritz was the best, but another program with deep archetecture was
Shredder, and it runs on macs. So I downloaded Deep Shredder 9, for
my iMac & I love it. It has won awards for the best speed chess
program, and has that deep archetecture just like Deep Blue.
I like it because it isn't restricted only to playing games...
