Engine Matches with Assymetric Time Allocation by Martin Brown
Arising out of the early thread about engine rating of top players it occurred to me that part of the problem is that we normally rate engines by how welll they do at a particular rate of match play 40 moves/40 mins or blitz 5' etc. But for the purposes of determining an accurate parity of engines it would sometime be useful to run an engine engine match with a variable time allocation so that...

Small Revival of Faile Program by chipschap@gmail.com
Back around 2000-2001 Adrien Regimbald wrote the very nice little chess program Faile, stopping at release 1.4. It was said to play at the 2000-2200 ELO level. Now, recently we've seen the small program BlindC, designed to play a reasonable game in "blind chess" mode. Alas, that was only a DOS executable; I wanted something for Linux, and BlindC in DOS emulation was slow. So I picked up Faile...

Mike Goodall, USCF EB Candidate: The British deserved to die by judgementday@clerk.com
How could the Brits keep Tony Blair in office? He's so stupid as to blindly follow Gearge Bush. Re the tragedy in London, to paraphrase Bobby Fischer on 9/11, you Brits had it coming. Mike Goodall We need a guy like this in the office. He and Sloan can rule this bloody federation for all I care.

Test Positions by Martin Brown
I know the various Nunn test sets that exist and most engines now can handle them pretty well. There are a few old chestnuts that still distress particular engines and are instantly handled by others. eg. 6kr/5b1p/2p3pP/rpPp1pP1/pP1PpP2/P3P3/1K6/8 w - - (William Harston composed anti-computer puzzle - cited by Roger Penrose in "Shadows of the Mind") The classic blocked pawn structure with a...

White to move and draw? by hal9000r@gmail.com
Not sure if black has a forced win or not. This position came up in one of my tournament games and I was getting low on time so i simply accepted my opponent's draw offer even though i'm a pawn up. I think it might be a textbook draw anyway. It's just out of the reach of the tablebases. 8/5k1N/7R/2np1r2/8/8/3K4/8 w - - 0 73 wKd2,Nh7,Rh6/bKf7,Nc5,Rf5,Pd5

please test my chess program by Folkert van Heusden
Hi, Yesterday I released a new version of my (very much) experimental chess program 'Pos'. It fixes quiet a bit of bugs and should play a little stronger altough that is still very weak. As I'm not a very good judge for how a chess program plays chess I would like to ask you people to test if for me and let me know what could be improved. Its website is: http://www.vanheusden.com/pos/

Where can I find interesting chess puzzles? by aravindanaik@yahoo.com
I am looking for chess puzzles those are 1. Where white and black has more or less equal power. Or the winner has less power. 2. Mate in less than or equal to 4 moves. 3. Puzzles should have some value when playing real chess. (Not the ones where mate in 2, and also mate in 3, 4 etc exists. We tend to break our head trying to find the "mate in 2" where the board indicates clearly that more or...
