How can I disable move branches in Chessmaster 7000? by schachspieler
I use Chessmaster 5000 / Chessmaster 7000 to play over games from books (and save them in my computer). When I retract a move and try a new one, a move branch is created. This isn't always useful and I would like to disable this option. (I remember disabling this was possible in Chessmaster 4000, which I no longer have.) There must be a way to do this, but I havent found it in the online help,...

A Serious Problem with MonRoi and the US Championship by samsloan
Joe Lux has uncovered a serious problem with Monroi. If he did not discover it, he is the first to report it. It seems that two newspapers have refused to publish game scores that first appeared on the Monroi website, because MonRoi is claiming a copyright on the games. It is well established that scores of a chess game cannot be copyrighted. However, the USCF is in no position to go to court...

Scid 3.6.11 released (chess database) by pascal
Hi, I released Scid 3.6.11 at http://prolinux.free.fr/scid/ The main changes are : - the possibility to play a "serious game" starting from any position and with more time controls (fixed depth, nodes, etc.) - the management of variations is easier (contextual menu) - a timer is added to tactical exercises - added statistics on repertoire knowledge and a report on repertoire

ProDeo time settings in Arena by DC
Hi all. I am setting up ProDeo 1.4 in Arena 199b4. I have set up a few other freeware engines in an attempt to have a small engine tourney. ProDeo works fine when I choose a tournament time limit like 40 moves in 10 minutes BUT if I choose a time limit of 10 seconds per move then it deos not work correctly. Where all of the other engines make a move at the 10 second mark (when not in...

Copyright on Namilov tablebases by Dave (from the UK)
Does anyone know the situation with regard to copyright on tablebases - I am interested in distributing some in chessdb http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/ (chess database) But this might be an issue since the rest of the software is GPL'ed. --

Fritz 9 vs Rybka in 5 Min blitz game question .. by SAT W-7
My friends Fritz 9 went one and sixteen in the 5 minute blitz games .. So then he played them at 25 min game and it was a draw and so he played them n 90 minute game and Fritz won... Why does Rybka dominate at 5 min games but draw or lose longer thinking games ? I am sure rybka can win those longer games but he only played those two games one time...

fritz 9 rated game by .
Is it at all possible to set up the engine (I tested at fritz elo 1620) so it should play more evenly? When set at 1620, it plays many moves at level 2000 and eventually to reach the average 1620 fritz 9 makes some stupid move losing its pown in a very visible way.

"Seirawan Chess" by M Winther
In "Seirawan Chess", invented by GM Yasser Seirawan, the rules are the same as in orthodox chess, except that two pieces, the Elephant (N+R) and the Hawk (N+B), are placed in the reserve. Whenever a piece leaves its initial square, one of the extra pieces can immediately be introduced to the vacant square. So this is a double move, comparable to castling. Should a player refrain from inserting...
