playchess server by Ange1o DePa1ma
I own both Shredder and CB 9. I recently tried to log in and they asked for a serial number. Does CB ownership provide a serial number (and membership in Playchess) for life? Or is it a one-year subscription? Thanks, Angelo

Runtime error during Fritz analysis by Wilma
I'm relatively new to Fritz. I've tried twice to get Fritz 9 to do a full analysis of a game. I gets to a certain point and gives me a runtime error. Can somebody tell me why and what to do about it? Wilma

Was sacrifice sound? Engines think not. by Dave (from the UK)
I've been having a bit of a tough time on ICC lately, loosing virtually all my games, although I won the one below as black. I made a sacrifice at 24...Rxd4, loosing a rook, but winning a pawn and knight. I thought I'd be better in the endgame with the extra pawn - I has slightly more material before this exchange, but after it I had just one extra pawn. I've analaysed this game with two...

Randy Bauer is wrong again by Sam Sloan
Randy Bauer wrote: "Susan Polgar is a former world champion, holds the men's and women's grandmaster title, helped the US medal in the last Olympiad, and is a tireless promoter of chess in this country. While Kasparaov, Kramnik, Anand, Leko, etc. may be great players, I don't recall any of them recently doing much to promote US chess. Polgar does. Personally, I also think she's much more...

My new chess book is out by Sam Sloan
My new chess book is out. It is a reprint of the great but long nearly forgotten classic "Collection of Chess Studies" by A. A. Troitzky, with a new introduction by Sam Sloan. This book is must reading for any serious tournament player because, although the studies are so difficult that no normal human will ever solve them, studying the solutions will reveal combinations that you can use in your...

Playing at FICS and ICC on PDAs (Windows Mobile and Palm OS) by ChessMobi@NoSpam.thanks
There are a couple of threads in this group about Internet play on PDAs. I have written a client for FICS and ICC for mobile phones supporting Java MIDP 2 which most phones except the most basic ones sold today do (see separate thread). It also works on Windows Mobile and on Palm OS although on Palms it has been reported that screen updates in Java programs are very slow, making it practically...

Hello, I have not found any proofs for the upper bound on the number of chess positions, so here is mine, clocking in at 169 bits. Will Entriken - 2006 Encoding chess positions with about 164 bits. This paper describes how to encode any legal chess position in less

autoplay by Folkert van Heusden
Hi, For your information: for those who (like me) are developping their own chess engine and would like to let it play against other engines without xboard as an interface I wrote autoplay. Autoplay can connect 2 xboard protocol compliant engines. Those 2 engines can be local running processes as well as one remote and one local or 2 remote. It helped me squashing quiet a few bugs by letting pos...

Wake up and smell the sheesh kebab! by nosh2006@gmail.com
The western world is SOFT. You Westerners are a bunch of spoiled, over-tolerant PUSSIES! I love what you and your religion stand for but I hate how you seldom make a strong pro-active stand behind it! The pope has the courage to speak up against violence embedded in Islam and the whole frikkin muslim world comes together as one and rubbish him. How many good Christians are rallying behind the...

Chess Program in Lua? by Telamon
Hey guys, I'm writing a mod for a popular first person shooter. It's a level that has a large chess board where a single player can play chess against the computer. I need a chess engine that is writen in Lua to embed in the level file. I have tried searching online and I am given to believe that no such thing exists. I'm hoping someone here can tell me that I am wrong. Regards

Mac program Gambit won't allow me to save to PGN files by raggio
I am testing out Gambit on my Mac tonight and like it so far, but I have one issue. It won't let me save to files. I get an error beep. Get info for the files shows that I can read and write to them. When i setup the position and select a pgn to use they all have a lock icon next to them. Really weird. Any one here using gambit and are you able to save to a pgn? I did not install it...

autoplay using xboard/winboard interface by Folkert van Heusden
Hi, Are there tools for unix out there that let 2 xboard-capable programs play chess against each other? Something that just emits some return-code or string with the result. Maybe with xboard itself? I would like to be able to run this completely unattended. Folkert

Play chess online on your mobile phone on FICS and ICC with free client by ChessMobi@NoSpam.thanks
There is now a chess client, Mobi, for FICS (the Free Internet Chess Server) and ICC (the Internet Chess Club) for mobile phones that conform to the Java MIDP 2.0 (and maybe for some confirming to the MIDP 1.0) standard, which all but the most basic phones sold today do. It has now been tested on a number of different devices and is, at last, downloadable for anyone for free. Find out more at...
