What is human-like chessplay in engine-land? by
Ruud
Many times in several newsgroups and forums I've read questions, references
and advice about chess-engines/programs that are supposed to play
'human-like' chess. (Very often Rebel/ProDeo comes up in these cases, btw.).
Chess being a somewhat mathematical game, I've never understood these
remarks. Besides, several humans play different styles and types of chess,
so that could also be the case with...

Fritz 8.0 CD by
ST
Hello,
I've been using Fritz 8.0 for some time now. Just today I changed
engines from Fritz 8, but when I tried to change back it asked for the CD.
Here's the problem, our home was destroyed in the tornadoes that came
through our town in March. Among the many things that were lost was
my Fritz CD. Is there a work around so I can once again use the 8 engine?

Scid question about importing FEN positions by
39N 95W
I guess this might really be an engine question, but when I copy a FEN
notation into Scid, the Scidlet engine can't do any analysis - it says that
the starting position is non-standard and therefore it can't do any
analysis. So, is there a Scid compatable engine that will do the analysis,
or are there tools to generate bogus moves to yield a certain position?
Any and all help appreciated.

Palm program by
Ange1o DePa1ma
I'm thinking of purchasing a palm handheld, mostly for chess related stuff.
1. Any recommendations as to best bang for the buck?
2. Any experience out there with Hiarcs for Palm? The website boasts a 2600
ELO on upper end Palm devices.
Thanks,
Angelo

Chess must be banned! by
neo
Because it is made to humiliate, insult, torture human beings. Amnesty
international should know that human intelligence can not compete with
computer intelligence.
Also this game is voilent. I see so much blood on my mobile screen.

Linux support for the Digital Game Timer (DGT) chess board and clock by
Pierre
Hello,
If you are interested in the Digital Game Timer chess board and clock
support for Linux and MacOS, you can have a look at the dgtnix project
on the page http://dgtnix.sourceforge.net/index.html .
For the moment the driver only support the eboard chess GUI (eboard
http://eboard.sourceforge.net/) but there is ongoing work to also
support other GUI's like knigths, the kde chess interface.

Can Beatriz Marinello be trusted? by
samsloan
She's known to lie. She's known to cheat the USCF out of money. She's
known to deceive people for a green card. She's known to turn her back
from her supporters.
Can anyone trust her again?

Fritz 8 Opening training by
John J.
Am I doing something wrong? I go to the opening training(detailed) and Fritz
only has 4-5 moves, no matter what the variation. I thought it would be
better.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Chess: Beginner level giving good competition. by
Sanny
Last time the Chess Game speed was improved but it reduced it's
thinking skills but now the game is fast as well as very strong.
Play at: http://www.softtanks.com/chessgame/Chess.html
Here you can play with Beginner level, Easy level, Normal levels.
I believe for Good players Easy level will be good to start. For new
players try playing the Beginner Level.

There are no good chess programs for Macintosh? by
ville.j.vainio@gmail.com
I switched to Macintosh a couple of weeks ago only to see that there
seems to be no decent chess programs for mac.
Here's what I have tried out so far:
Shredder Classic Mac - Nice looking interface but game exporting
(including printing of games!?) isn't supported.
SigmaChess 6 - Promising set of features but apparently doesn't support
alternative move variations.
Vektor 3 - Almost zero...

Fritz 9 - Anti-CD (DVD)? Patches? by
Betsy Schwartz
I just bought Fritz 9 (from a reputable vendor) but am having problems with
the software complaining that I don't have the original CD and refusing to
run analysis mode. (it does say CD although this is a DVD)
Before I jump into the whole tech support routine, I'm wondering if there's
an anti-CD-check patch to just work around this? Or any known
incompatibilities or workarounds? Or patches? ...

Don't use Rybka book by
OneGuy
Don't use the book that comes with rybka. Rybka didn't perform as well
with this book on SSDF games than the book they were using before
(free book that comes with Arena). Also, I saw some posts by the
author of that book on a different forum. He is one loud mouth
arrogant moron -- insulting everyone who questions any line in "his"
worthless book.

Beatriz supports the right party by
Stan Booz
Beatriz is a strong woman who's willing to stand up against Goichberg,
Schultz and Channing. She's also willing to stand up against Bessel Kok
and support Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. She's entitled to change her mind and
negotiate the best deal. It's a free country. She should be praised for
the decision to support FIDE and she should be the FIDE General
Secretary.

Chessbase Website by
Ange1o DePa1ma
Today's CB "report" on the Sofia tournament contained two links to videos
that did not work, and a second link to "all games so far in PGN" that did
not contain today's games (even though the results were listed). In fact the
database file contained only nine games out of 18 played.
I know CB likes to dump crap on their website and call it journalism. I can
almost understand that, as covering...
