Default Tony Pabon of California

I just noticed that Tony Pabon received two write-in votes from
California in the USCF Executive Board Election.

I knew Tony Pabon in either 1956 or 1957. I only met him one time but
the meeting was memorable. He came to the Lynchburg Chess Club with
his friend, Peter Kerr. I was almost the only person at the club,
which was held in the Virginian Hotel. I had never heard his name
since.

The reason I remember the year is because Bobby Fischer has just won
his famous "Game of the Century" against Donald Byrne, which took
place in late 1956. Tony Pabon said that he had heard that Fischer won
the game on a blunder. Fischer had left a piece on pris by mistake.
Byrne took it but by luck Fisher had a brilliant win.

We now know that this was not true. Fischer's sacrifice was a real
sacrifice, not a blunder. However, at that time, Fischer was still a
promising junior, aged 13, and not many realized the shape of things
to come.

Assuming that this is the same Tony Pabon, he must be around 70 years
old by now. I remember that he complained that he and Peter Kerr
travelled to the US Junior Championship together, and then they were
paired against each other in the first round.

I think that after that they made a rule that two players from the
same city could not be paired against each other. I doubt that that
rule still exists.

It is remarkable that I can remember a person I only met once 47 years
ago. I doubt that he can remember me at all.
