One may wonder if Sultan Khan didn't care for
the Western chess due to his (possible) disgust with the Western chess players' (lack of sufficient) personal hyggiene. During the years of Sultan Khan's chess activity the air conditioning was not yet around the chess tournament halls, chess players were smoking and drinking (and stinking). Today Anand can be grateful for the airconditioning. Here is a quote from Robert Kanigel's, (c) 1991, "The Man who Knew Infinity. A Life of the Genius Ramanujan.", ISBN 0-684-19259-4 (see p.244), quote: Even the prevalence of body odors among the English nystified him--until, the story goes, one day he was enlighten about it at a tea party. A woman was complaining that the problem with the working classes was that they failed to bathe enough, sometimes not even once a week. Seeing disgust writ large on Ramanujan's face, she moved to reassure him that the Englishemen -he- met were sure to bathe daily. "You mean", he asked, "you bathe only -once- a day? Regards, Wlod |

I don't remember what color his shirt was, however, I am certain it
was discolored by various bodily fluids and food/drink stains and such. (Rafael Rodriguez) wrote in message . com... (Florida Chess) wrote in message . com... I witnessed an absolutely disgusting player at the USOPEN: He was a senior player with all sorts of open wounds on his arms He constantly picked his teeth (with both hands) and then would touch the pieces leaving fragments of decaying food/flesh on the pieces and board Next he would belch constantly with no effort to stop himself and just being a spectator many feet away I could smell a very strong, foul odor He also found it necesary to constantly pick his nose I wonder if his opponent shook his hand at the end of the game? Comments? Did he wear a purple shirt? |

Comments? Funny, how squeamish some people are...I'm a senior citizen. Now, I have no idea about those open sores, but I do know that lots of older people take a long time to heal bruises, and thier skin can be easily broken. About the belching...you mean you never belch? And finally...I pick my nose...but I never flick the boogers at people, UNLESS...they really **** me off. |

Comments? Were this player's initials RF, and not an expatriate GM and not as far as I know in jail or Japan? |
