The photo is authentic. It was taken last week by a Japanese news service.
As you can see, it fits perfectly the clothing description reported in articles documenting Fischer's arrest. |

When that photo was first posted on a Japanese news site it was
accompanied by text saying it was of Fischer being transferred to another facility. Since it was first posted the day he was transferred, this seems likely. ... Bush strikes again: http://www.dmv.demon.nl/ Poor Bobby. The videos available on this site are absolutely fantastic and I urge every chess fan to have a look. That Dutch documentary must have been brilliant. All the Russian masters speak such good English! Yasser is such a nice guy! It must have been hard for him to argue with Fischer about anti-semitism. |

Hi there Mig,
If that is right, do you think he is deliberately opening his mouth to show the world what happened to his teeth when he was arrested? When told he would lose his teeth if he did that, he was said to have replied that he'd just have to "gum it". I would guess this might better account for his poor dentition than police brutality. You guess wrong. Whatever Fred Waitzkin says in his book, this should not deter from the fact that the goons at the airport chipped a number of his teeth. Some readers may recall that the police story regarding Blair Peach in the UK was that he had an unusually thin skull. (The police had beaten him to death on a demonstration, with truncheon blows to the head). When the photo was taken, maybe the reason Fischer was opening his mouth is because he was saying something. But it may well be that Jon's speculation is bang on the button. -- banana "The thing I hate about you, Rowntree, is the way you give Coca-Cola to your scum, and your best teddy-bear to Oxfam, and expect us to lick your frigid fingers for the rest of your frigid life." You guess wrong. Whatever Fred Waitzkin says in his book, this should not deter from the fact that the goons at the airport chipped a number of his teeth. From the picture, it looks like teeth are *missing*, not just chipped. And the shorter teeth could be rotted stumps rather than all broken off. The redness around his mouth? A cut lip (there was quite a fracas, after all) or a cough drop. We're still guessing, aren't we? Some readers may recall that the police story regarding Blair Peach in the UK was that he had an unusually thin skull. (The police had beaten him to death on a demonstration, with truncheon blows to the head). This, of course, has absolutely nothing to do with Fischer. I mean, UK versus Japanese cops, different victim (or perp, as the case may be), took place in a demonstration rather than an individual arrest, etc. But, if you think it's evidence, well, put it out there. Maybe Nick will add some quotes from the Guardian about Blair Peach. When the photo was taken, maybe the reason Fischer was opening his mouth is because he was saying something. But it may well be that Jon's speculation is bang on the button. Maybe. It's a reasonable guess. If you two are correct, Fischer's attorney will no doubt make it an issue. |

How can Fischer, with such bad teeth, kiss his bride?
Indeed, poor Bobby. "Peter van der Hoog" wrote in message ... Bush strikes again: http://www.dmv.demon.nl/ Poor Bobby. Peter van der Hoog |

Some readers may recall that the police story regarding Blair Peach in the UK was that he had an unusually thin skull. (The police had beaten him to death on a demonstration, with truncheon blows to the head). This, of course, has absolutely nothing to do with Fischer. It was meant as 'retaliation' (pre-emptive, but what's wrong with that? :-)) to the idea that since Fischer may have had bad teeth prior to getting beaten up, his teeth may have chipped unusually easily, therefore no blame should be attributed to his grabbers. This is opposed to the idea that if someone has bad teeth and they get chipped by their attackers, this abhorrent and humiliating turn of events at least has a 'silver lining' in so far as it provides evidence of what the perpetrators have done. IMO anyone who has thought properly about Fischer and what kind of person he is, regardless of what they think about his opinions about this, that, or the other, realises that he is an absolutist where honesty is concerned. If he says the goons chipped his teeth, then I believe him. I mean, UK versus Japanese cops, different victim (or perp, as the case may be), took place in a demonstration rather than an individual arrest, etc. But, if you think it's evidence, well, put it out there. I ask myself what I would do if I'd had my teeth chipped by State goons, was still in custody, and saw a film crew. I'd open my mouth and say this is what they did to me, get a bloody good picture of it. -- banana "The thing I hate about you, Rowntree, is the way you give Coca-Cola to your scum, and your best teddy-bear to Oxfam, and expect us to lick your frigid fingers for the rest of your frigid life."
