Guys, be happy for chess and India that Anand manages to popularize the

game
to such a great extent! In that light, who cares about names of

tournaments!

That`s correct Pete, on my side it was only an ironic reply to Ian Burton`s
post ;-)
BTW IMHO the present (FIDE or sth else) WorldChessChamp should play as often
as possible to popularize chess.

Jerzy

The term Super GM Tournament is reserved for tournaments in which the
players all have a rating of 2700 or better. This is no Super

Tournament.

As a matter of fact there is no such a title as Super GM. Thus there are,

in
fact, no Super GM Tournaments :-)

True enough, but the term is common and is accepted to mean a tournament
with 2700 players only.

Anyway it`s not correct to call officially such tournaments Super GM
Tournaments until there is no such a title.

I postulated once in rgcm group an introduction of such titles. Siegbert
Tarrasch used to say that there should be 16 grandmasters in the world, the
strongest 16 players, and the 17th should be automatically excluded from the
list. However there has been no response from FIDE officials yet :-)

Jerzy

Not quite true, there is a response from FIDE in this regard, see:

http://www.fide.com/ratings/top.phtml

As you can see, the 16 grandmasters have 2700+ ratings, the others have
lower ratings.

I think that that is a good idea, but that one should also get a
more lasting title for that. Something like we do with our presidents
here in Finland: the currently reigning president has the official
title "President of the republic" (translation mine and inofficial)
while the past presidents are referred to as simply "president".

Perhaps one could refer to the current top 16 as "FIDE Super GM" as
it is the FIDE rating list that is used, and call past FIDE Super GMs who
have fallen out of the top 16 simply Super GMs.

That`s correct but it is merely a funny coincidence affirmative the
corectness of Siegbert Tarrasch` postulate but not an aware action on FIDE
officials` side
Thus maybe it`s an answer from the heavens above :-)

OK it`s a great honor to be a president so it`s all right.

I am stubborn : there has been no Super GM title yet :-)
I`ve heard many arguments against temporariness of the title but it`s the
clue.
Such a title should be used solely for chess advertisement but not for
honorary distinguishment.

Jerzy

Don't you know that Kirsan is a reincarnation of Tarrasch?

You mean just like "FIDE World Champion"?

No, he is claimed to be the 69th reincarnation of Chinggis (Genghis) Khaan
:-)
