Yevgeni Gik, A Turncoat of a Journalist

Oh, my God, is there any limit to unpleasant surprises? Or to bad
people? This is what I thought reading Yevgeni Gik’s article
“The Kind Man Who Supports Terrorism” published in the
newspaper “Moscovski Komsomolets” on August 31. Today on
September 3 it was reprinted in New York by the Russian paper “V
Novom Svete”( In the New World”).
I also asked myself which is the best way to punish such an author?
Should Spassky sue Gik, or should he give him a good slap? Well,
it’s up to Spassky. As to me, being a journalsit, I can only
write my comment.
Gik quotes Spassky’s letter to President Bush: “.Arrest
me. And put me in the same cell with Bobby Fischer. And give us a
chess set”.
So, what is so bad about that? But for Gik’s perverse mind there
is his own, so to say, explanation. This is Gik’s
comment:”Funny letter! Spassky knows too well that every time he
touches chess pieces playing against Fischer he wins a fortune.
Especially if they meet in Bobby’s prison. It should be noted
that Spassky never pronounces a single word without thinking: he never
wants to upset Fischer, his sponsor. That is why, probably, he calls
Bobby “an honest and kind man” Well, no one as good as
Bobby…”
“This time, however, continues Gik, Spassky’s shot did not
work. “I saw Spassky’s letter, reacted Fischer, I
didn’t like it. I didn’t like the tone – he was
trying to make me sound like a weirdie. And he is begging Bush for
mercy?”
Gik was also quick to quote Bobby’s words on Kosteniuk: I
don’t want Spassky in my cell. I want a chick. How about that
Russian chick, what’s her name, Kosteniuk?”
Well, so much for quoting the dirty words of the dirty journalist.
Before Gik was known to the chess world as the most prolific author of
chess books which are in fact nothing shameless compilations of other
authors’ books. With years they have become the compilations of
Gik’s book. This is ‘stunt flying’ in the world of
publishing! As grandmaster Taimanov who knows Gik quite well said,
“Gik has written by now more than Dumas and Zola
together”. I would add here Balzac as well!
Gik has always served his masters. He began his publishing career
ghost-writing for Karpov. Then he was trying for some time to court
Kasparov in the Indian file of Kasparov’s backscratchers.
Actually, he never had any relations with Spassky, and from what I
read previously he was quite friendly to Spassky. According to
Gik’s own story, when Spassky came to Russia after a long break
in 1997 he met the former World Champion at the airport. Narrating
this meeting, Gik made many quotes from the interview I had taken with
Spassky in January 1997. Certainly, Gik passed all Spassky’s
words as if he had spoken to Gik, but not Lev Khariton! This kind of
piracy has become since long Gik’s stock-in-trade!
One of my friends who had sent me Gik’s article from
“Moscovski Komsomolets” called Gik “the mirror of
the Russian prostitution” (do you remember Lenin as ‘the
mirror of the Russian Revolution’, according to Lenin?). Quite
an appropriate definition!
Dear friends, I know Spassky quite well. He is a man who will never
put his diginty below money.He gave me a very long interview (we spoke
for almost four hours in his house in Meudon, near Paris). At the end
of the interview I asked him how much my newspaper “La Pense
Russe” owed him. He just said: “Nothing”. I have a
great experience in interviewing different chess players. Spassky was
the first and the last man who did not speak about money! To say that
Boris Spassky wants to play another match with Bobby for money…
I would like to take it as a joke.But no, Gik’s article is not a
joke. Otherwise, he would not have written about Spassky supporting a
terrorist or terrorism. This is a dirty political accusation. Gik
knows too well into his hands he is playing (remember the word
‘prostitution’, used by my friend?) By the way, Fischer
was officially arrested for his invalid passport, and no one has yet
charged him with terrorism.
As someone representing Evil most graphically, Gik cannot imagine that
Spassky’s best years as a chess player are for ever associated
with Fischer, assomeone who remembers his friends and his youth,
although at the chessboard both players were great rivals. But always
honest and fair-minded rivals! On the contrary, I was expecting this
letter from Spassky, and when I saw it I felt a great relief. At least
one chess player wrote a letter in defence of Fischer, in defence of
justice! Where are the others? Korchnoi, Bronstein, Smyslov,Larsen,
Taimanov? Are they afraid of being accused as supporters of
terrorism?!
As to Fischer’s words regarding Kosteniuk, Fischer, as the
saying goes, cuts diamond with diamond. He has seen some many websites
by now where female chess players act out as nudes, and this is his
response to the profanation of his game.May be, Bobby thinks these
‘chicks’ should better do porno and sex instead of
bothering themselves with chess?

into Russian without Fischer`s permission ? Do you boast about it as usual

Hahaha, I am laughing out loud. Profanation to all decent people are
Fischer`s interviews no matter whether he is in jail or free but not
pictures of Kosteniuk or Manakova. Maybe you are so old that you hate all
beautiful women ?

BTW Spassky should have addressed his letter for mercy to Japan government
however he had chosen an easy way of self-advertisement and addressed his
letter to the USA...

Do you ever look at what you post here? For me at least it is always
rendered practically unreadable by the vast number of ’s that are
sprinkled right through it.
Is it just me? Do I need to alter some settings?

It's not "piracy" when Khariton the ex-ChessCafe contributor does it,
apparently.

compose "an article". What do you want to "prove"? That Gik is a

Fischer "wants" too much. The only "chick" he can get in his "cell" is
Dunka Kulakova.
