Default Hubner v Kortschnoi 1980

Someone asked Ray Keene this:
"I have always been curious to know the circumstances of the defaulted 1980
candidates final between Robert Huebner and Victor Korchnoi. In your 1981
book on the World Championship match of the same year, you write "after a
promising start the sensitive German Grandmaster ... blundered away a rook
in a crucial game and soon after abandoned the match. There were rumours of
internal squabbling in his camp but the whole affair remains highly
obscure."
As I understand it, at the time Hueber quit there were eight games played,
with the ninth and tenth games adjourned. How many games was the match
scheduled for? And why did Huebner quit, or are the circumstances still
obscure even 23 years later?"

Ray responded:

"I have heard the most scurrilous stories and rumours about the premature
end of this match which frankly beggar belief.they centre on the
relationship between robert hubner, a trainer, and robert's backer ,one
wilfred hilgert, now deceased i believe, having reached rock bottom at a
critical stage of the contest. however the allegations i have heard cannot
possibly be repeated on a family website such as this.in my book i was
diplomatic and must remain so here..."

So what's all that about?

Just to keep this in perspective, it wasn't the first time RH withdrew
prematurely from a match. He did the same against Petrosian (I forget
the year), because he was distracted by noises from the street or some
such.
