Default Next steps for training. Chess coach advice.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for your kind words. I do want to be a good student! Mike,
in the previous post, mentions Dan Heisman. I happen to own a book of
his and his beginner articles are great on chesscafe. Another bonus,
is he lives within driving distance(under an hour)! However, I have my
limits when discussing the cost of lessons. Dan is just too high for
me.

There are a few experienced titled coaches on ICC(with good reviews) I
am considering trying out. For two hours of lessons there are all in
the price range of $40 - $50. Plus they give homework, review my work,
etc...

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Any good coach should be able to work with you the way you outline

it...you
sound like an ideal student.
Sorry I don't really like doing distance teaching or i'd offer my own

services.

Good luck

Jim,

Gee, I have no limits when discussing the cost of lessons. It is only
when I have to pay that it becomes a problem!

I always tell anyone who asks that I am sure there are many good
instructors who charge less than I do; I suggest they try them and, if
they like them and feel they get their money's worth, great. In this
market you do not always get what you pay for, so you must be
discerning. I feel it is unprofessional to try to talk someone into
using me if they cannot afford it. Of course, I don't require that my
students take weekly lessons, so many of my students budget their
costs by only taking lessons at an interval they can afford; most do
NOT take them weekly. I am not so desperate that I want to ever take
advantage of anyone; they have to feel it is worth it to use me. I
even wrote a Novice Nook on this:
http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heisman21.pdf

Of course, much of what I have written above I explain at my website,
too.

In defense of my fees, I only charge a fraction of what Bruce
Pandolfini and many other top instructors charge and if I charged
considerably less, then I would be too busy and would have to turn
away business. So I guess this is just a good example of capitalism
and supply and demand at work. I also give a money-back guarantee, so
that if anyone feels their lesson was not worth it, they can always
ask for their money back. Thankfully I think I do a good job and very
few have.

Best wishes,
Dan H
