Default wanted: computerized chess that moves pieces automatically

hi there!
i've heard of a computerized chess set that, amazing as it sounds, is
capable of moving the men automatically!! i'm doing searches like
crazy but can't find anything on it - so i hope someone reading this
can shed some light on this or tell me that this is nothing but a hoax

About ten years ago, USCF sold a chess
computer where the pieces moved by
themselves. If I remember correctly,
someone told me that 1 Nf3 (for example)
would be accomplished by the f and g
pawns sliding apart, the knight moving
between them to f3, and then the f and
g pawns would slide back into position.

I once tried to order one of these machines,
but it did not work and I decided to return
it and ask for a refund instead of requesting
another one.

Like the sensory board, this technology sounds dubious at best. It's like
the old "chess-playing automaton" from the 19th century.

Better to do it with computers. Even in an OTB tournament, each player
could be given a computer screen and a mouse, then the players could play
face-to-face a la the internet.
