I have no doubt that those apparently proud Americans could find many examples of poverty and desperation (and, yes, of pornography and prostitution) in the United States. But the 'Voice of America' propaganda broadcasts (which tend to be ridiculed by my American expat acquaintances) prefer to ignore, if not to deny, many realities of life in the United States. --Nick |

Nick initiated use of this phrase in several troll posts. AFAIK, nobody else has. For example, in one exchange with Stan Booz, Nick trolled, "Does StanB enjoy having his 'freedom fries'?, where upon the Boozer squelched him with "Too high in fat for me. Do you enjoy eating crow? ". Heh, heh, heh. I have been amused that some American writers here seem (or pretend) to be shocked Can Nick cite a single poster in this newsgroup who has expressed "shock" at the existence of poverty, desperation, porn and prostitution in Hungary? by the existence of poverty and desperation (and, yes, of pornography and prostitution) in Hungary. Can Nick name a single poster in this newsgroup who has cited broadcasts from the "Voice of America" in relation to the poverty, desperation, port and prostitution being discussed ? This arguing with phantoms is disconcerting. Sort of like sitting by a derelict ranting to himself on the bus. Nick should at least have the decency to register another handle, say, "Proud_Yank", who could post these things so that his alter ego, Nick, could attack them. --Nick |

With the greatest respect, old chap, I fear that you really don't have
the hang of this, do you? Some of your posts, e.g. your reply to me in "How can a 2...." are wonderfully witty. Others, I fear, such as the one to which this is a reply, are just plain stupid. Now, you're clearly a most intelligent individual, as you have demonstrated often. On the other hand, I am hardly the sharpest tool in the box, as I have clearly demonstrated often, and you pointed out recently, as I mention. So at the *very serious* risk of seeming to be the pot which is calling the kettle black, and all, may I respectfully suggest that you consider refraining from posting in such a way as might encourage responses such as these (that is, Murray's and mine)? Chess One wrote: There is absolutely nothing that is thought to be worthy of public transparency on the one hand, while what is made public in CL is trash. Its not porn, not that bad, but it will cost a few hundred memberships. When the previous editor did the same coy sexy stuff it lost a female organiser from Chicago. Nobody evidently cared enough to do anything about editorial prctice. I recall an announcement Mr. Pehme is no longer editor of Chess Life. So much for "Nobody...cared." Its not the fault of a temporary editor that this got into print, its a confusion on what he felt obliged to put in print. This is a result of the new secret form of governance. As usual Phil, your insight into editorial practices is amazing, since you have no experience as an editor. This is leaving aside your special insight into the mind of the current CL editor. Neither this nor the blatantly political attack on Goichberg in CL will have any effect at all on future behavior. Keep up the brownnosing Phil, you'll sell those Shahcom boards yet! If Beatriz, who was in charge of the office at the time, approved or knew about the article, she must resign. She should not resign - and she should not condemn this article either. She should take responsibility for it. Nonsense. The magazine is the editor's job - and responsibility. (Snip gibberish from His I-ness) |

Taylor Kingston wrote: wrote: "Chess is an odd profession that doesn'tattract many women. Players are often regarded as nerds, and it's virtually impossible to make a living from the game." -- GM Larry Evans See THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT worldchessnetwork.com (June 9, 2003) for his brief review of this book by Walter Tevis who also wrote The Hustler. Thanks for the link, Larry. I noticed there also a 1990 interview Evans had with GM Yuri Averbakh: http://www.worldchessnetwork.com/Eng...ans/040329.php. I should warn you: if Phil Innes and Goran Tomic learn of this, Evans (and possibly you) may soon be under fire for "single-sourcing the KGB," as Phil puts it. They seem to believe that Averbakh is a KGB agent primarily responsible for the decline and fall of Western Civilization, and consider anyone who interviews him (as I did in June 2002) to be an active collaborator in this evil design. Be prepared for an onslaught of anguished English. But Phil writes in the British Language! |
