I have not received the May Chess Life yet. (Perhaps they decided not
to send it to me.) However, an email just apeared on one of my Yahoo Chess groups which states that an article in the May Chess Life describes lesbianism, prostitution and other sexual acts. The majority of Chess Life readers are children. Such an article is more than merely objectionable. It is especially significant that the May Chess Life, unlike any previous isue of Chess Life, was produced under the direct supervision and control of Beatriz Marinello. The reason for this is that Beatreiz Marinello had the Chess Life Editor, Kalev Pehme fired on January 22, 2005. He was replaced by Glenn Petersen, the long time editor, but only one month later Petersen had two major heart attacks right after being ordered by Beatriz Marinello to remove my candidates statement from the April Chess Life. Petersen was replaced by Gerard Dullea, but then he had to be hospitalized for angioplasty. This left Beatriz, who is still working in the New Windsor office where Chess Life is produced, in charge. If the Chess Life article (which again I have not seen yet) is at it is described below, I demand that Beatriz Marinello resign or be removed immediately. There is simply no excuse for this kind of material appearing in a magazine that is read by our children. I am the father of six children who are or have been members of the USCF and readers of Chess Life. I am sure that all parents will be outraged if the article is as it is described below. Sam Sloan In a message dated 5/9/2005 5:11:12 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, Hello Chess Life, IM Tim Taylor is a good storyteller and annotator (May 2005 Chess Life) but something's real wrong. Did you not consolidate School Mates into Chess Life? An editor who thinks chess parents would like their kids to read about prostitution, seduction, late night porn, kissing techniques, lecherous dogs, 'the best lesbian show in town', Hustler magazine, etc. should be fired immediately. Please don't degrade our publication and directly contravene the USCF Mission Statement with further fare of this sort. The majority of Chess Life readers are children.
This would appear to be incorrect. Chess Life includes a School Mates insert sent to scholastic members every other month. They would be included in the April and June issues, but not in the May issue. Lets take the latest membership numbers off of: http://detroitchess.com/USCFmem2.htm Adults receiving the May CL fall in the: L/Z: 10747 R: 21142 E: 2978 S: 306 B: 842 V: 105 Total: 36120 (There may be a small number of children who are Life or Sustaining members, but I would assume it is inconsequential.) Adult Affiliates: A: 657 P: 14 T: 50 Total: 721 Children receiving the May issue: J: 10755 W: 1137 (I'm not sure about where the family category should be included, but will include it here in order to be entirely fair.) Total: 11892 Children Affiliates: H: 620 G: 60 (Again college affiliates might be more properly included with adults, but I want to be fair.) TotalL 680 So, we have for the May issue: Adults: 36841, 74.55% Children: 12572, 25.44% This is the number receiving the issue in question. From the complaints over the years that I have heard from Scholastic organizers, I would strongly suspect that adults read their CL in at least the percentage of children. For the months including School Mates, add to the children U 19631. So for the April and June issues: Adults: 36841, 53.36% Children: 32203, 46.64% In all cases, the majority is adults. - Tom Martinak |

"Tom Martinak" So for the April and June issues:
Adults: 36841, 53.36% Children: 32203, 46.64% So the total membership for the USCF is down to about 49,000?? That is much less than the 93,000 which Marinello claims are members in the Affidavits which she signed to the Court. Now do you see how easy it is to fudge votes?? She literally can vote for thousands of others if she wants to. The CPA is expecting up to 93,000 votes, just like Marinello told the Federal Court. Isn't her affidavit FRAUD? A difference of 43,000 less than what she claimed is a major lie. |

(I'm not sure about where the family category should be included, but will include it here in order to be entirely fair.) Family members (type W) do not receive a magazine. However, under the new family membership plans passed last August, in order for someone to be a 'W' member there must either be an adult family membership (type R) or a youth family membership (type J) in the same household, so that the family receives Chess Life every month. -- Mike Nolan |

Seems to me that this objection to an unsubstantiated article by
someone who's: 1. Run for public office; 2. Runs for USCF Executive Board annually; and 3. Brags about his exploitation of "young girls" on his own website is truly laughable. The article in question may, in fact, be objectionable, but using the old adage "let he who is without sin cast the first stone," Sloan would have to wait to pitch his after Michael Jackson and a few hundred Catholic priests. You're nobody's moral-compass, Sammy. Can it. MN Sam Sloan wrote: I have not received the May Chess Life yet. (Perhaps they decided not to send it to me.) Sam,
It's pretty much as described. I would have found it a good read in an adult magazine as the sorry hard life of an American chess professional. It is out of bounds for a magazine with a heavy youth audience. I would expect parents of young kids to go nuts as word gets around. Bad editorial decision to not assist author in making an interesting article more suitable for the entire Chess Life auidence. Allan Fifield |

Randy Kaech USCF Life Member, scholastic tournament director, parent Ferndale, Washington I did receive my May Chess Life today, and have to acknowledge that Sam has, unfortunately, benefitted from his unconfirmed scoop. I say unfortunately because this tends to reinforce the position that "first to press, regardless of truth" sometimes bears fruit. That this constitutes an objectionable act on the part of Chess Life within the cultural environs within it publishes is without doubt. Apparently, while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, irony can be found in the hands of the quickest keyboardist. If anything, Mr. Kaech's description of the article is tame, as it misses the menage-a-trois imagery of the punchline w/respect to the best "lesbian show in town," and fails to point out the final editorial lines of the article: "Tim Taylor's story of his adventures in Hungary will be continued." O Joy. I cannot wait. Regardless of whether this article falls in an issue received by scholastic members, the article is written in a style, and with content, outside the scope of what is expected of Chess Life and the USCF. Does this demand the resignation of elected board members? I say, "No." Does it highlight the problems associated with the lack of leadership in the vacant ED (and Editor) position(s)? "Yes, it does." That failure to fill these vital positions can be laid at the doorstep of no one else than the current board. The fruit has ripened, and "..will be continued soon." To our board: please prevent this while you can. To our board: Public perception is a key ingredient in the extent to which chess is viewed as a mainstream rather than a fringe activity. Please manage that perception in a responsible manner in your selection of key staff. To our editorial staff: Please provide writing guidelines to our authors. To our members: Please manage that perception through your election of responsible board members who represent your viewpoint, and speak with a voice that you wish was your own. Once, the question of interest was, "Who would you invite to dinner?" Given the apparent lack of common sense displayed in the publication of this article, in the context of today's chess demographic, we must add, "What do you display on your coffee table?"
