Since winter break is coming up, and I will not be going anywhere, I
would like to write an articles on some 19th century chess figure (obscure is fine; the more colorful the better). Any suggestions? Jerry Spinrad |

Any suggestions? I am not sure if he qualifies but I would love to see a good one of Jacob Henry Sarratt (1772-1819). I have been trying to see a copy of Elizabeth Guénard's Three Monks!!! for years but it is a very rare book. Alan |

Might I suggest picking someone from Kasparov's chapter entitled "Chess
Before Steinitz" in his MY GREAT PREDECESSORS, PART 1. Also, the chapter on Steinitz. One of the wonderful surprises I got when I received Kasparov's book was the coverage of so many chess players below the world champion class and the historical perspective K gives them. Sounds like some interesting characters inhabited the chess world back then. As you said, a lot of good suggestions; I might try to do all of them eventually. Actually, I already have done articles on a couple (Cochrane and Williams). For now, I am leaning towards Mongredien. I have come across many references to his pamphlets on economics, and I think that there is quite a bit of material out there which is not known to chess players about his life, even though he is rather well known as an opponent to various top players. Jerry Spinrad In article , "John Townsend" writes: | I see that some decent suggestions have already been made. To these may I | add | | John Worrall | Harry Wilson | William Fraser | George Walker | William Greenwood Walker - you did say obscure. You may have seen the attack in the Chess Player's Chronicle on George Walker, in which George is called "the greenwood shade" making an elaborate play on words involving his supposed bad copying of W.G. Walker. I don't have the impression that WG Walker led the kind of life that makes interesting stories, however, despite the role he played in advancing the game by helping so much with the McDonnell - Labourdonnais match. | | Jerry, let us know what you decide. | | Best wishes, | | John Townsend | Howard Staunton research project: | http://www.johntownsend.demon.co.uk/page7.html | | | | | | | | | |

How about Max Judd? I am curious about him because he was not from
NYC. Or Max Weiss? Must have been very strong (tie 1st in New York 1889), but is largely forgotten.
