Default Biography of Al Lawrence by Sam Sloan

Al Lawrence will certainly be happy to learn that Sam Sloan is the
person who has written his biography. Here it is:

Al Lawrence
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Al Lawrence (b. in Nebraska) is a chess expert and a chess politician.
He was originally a school teacher in Nebraska. He came to work for
the United States Chess Federation in 1981 and in 1988 he was
appointed as Executive Director.

During his time in office, Lawrence greatly increased both the
membership and the revenues of the USCF. Membership rose from about
50,000 to 84,000 and annual sales and revenues rose from less than $4
million to more than $6.5 million, which is still a record. Lawrence
was especially effective in increasing books and equipment sales.
Sales of chess books and equipment rose to over $3.5 million under Al
Lawrence.

However, Lawrence was controversial. He was repreatedly attacked by
Tom Dorsch who wanted him fired. Dorsch was a backer of USCF President
Denis Barry, who also wanted to fire Lawrence. In addition, board
member Fan Adams wanted to fire Lawrence, because of the Garry
Kasparov - Florencio Campomanes controversy which had occurred at the
Chess Olympiad in Moscow 1994. However, they could not get four other
members of the seven-member policy board to vote for this, so Lawrence
kept his job.

This became a central issue in the 1996 election race for USCF
President between Don Schultz, who wanted to fire Lawrence, and Sam
Sloan, who wanted to keep Lawrence. Schultz won the election by a wide
margin. Only two hours after the votes were counted and it was known
that Schultz and Dorsch had been elected and that Lawrence was doomed,
the outgoing lame duck board voted to give Lawrence a golden parachute
of more than $100,000. Lawrence immediately resigned as Executive
Director and took the money, hours before he was about to be fired.

Lawrence subsequently went to work for Excaliber at the World Chess
Hall of Fame in Miami, and continues there to this day.

Given the low level of factual accuracy, I would not be too sure of
that. I post a few corrections below.

Al Lawrence
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Al Lawrence (b. in Nebraska) is a chess expert and a chess politician.

Lawrence was born in Illinois, not Nebraska. It seems rather a
semantic stretch to call him a "chess politician," since he has never
run for nor held any elected USCF office.

Don Schultz, who wanted to fire Lawrence,

By what authority could Schultz have done this?

Lawrence immediately resigned as Executive
Director and took the money, hours before he was about to be fired.

Same question. Does Schultz himself claim he could have fired
Lawrence?

Lawrence subsequently went to work for Excaliber at the World Chess
Hall of Fame in Miami, and continues there to this day.

The correct spelling is Excalibur.

Taylor makes more objections than Al does himself

In terms of this stalking method, I note some wag said 'imitation is the
sincerest form of flattery.'

Al Lawrence has more sense than I do, and doesn't bother replying to
the likes of Sloan on newsgroups.

If pointing out that Illinois is not Nebraska constitutes "stalking,"
then I plead guilty.

Taylor, if you ever discover what Innes means by "stalking", please let
me know.

?? Al responded on a moderated newsgroup directly to Sam - you have to
write your name to your posts - there are interesting discussions !!

Below are one week's notices concerning Nil Brennan, who is as well
respected alesewhere as here, and who later joined a humanities fellowship
group under an anonymous moniker, and tried to get himself thrown off, so he
could play the victim -:-

But this isn't his stalking activity, this is just Neal Brennan's normal
schtick, since its his only way to get attention from anyone but Taylor
Kingston.

Now - this has nothing to do with Al Lawrence and Sam Sloan. Brennan is not
capable of uttering anything other than 13 year old emotional alarums about
the adult world, and Taylor Kingston acts in condemnation from no
information whatever, and what he suspected is completely wrong.

This doesn't make Sam Sloan right, it simply make Brennan and Kingston /far/
less right. As far as I can see Sam Sloan is open to resonable comment in
adjusting his text - but not all of his critics can even admit it when they
are wrong.

On Neal Brennan

Ø It's a little disconcerting when people who ignore me entirely the
rest
of the time pop up to reassure me (sometimes even delurking to do this,
and relurking immediately afterward) when I've come close to losing my
temper with a (nevertheless, even if inexplicably) popular "troll."
Obviously, I don't have any way of knowing just what prompts it.

Still no response from Peter and "C" - what a surprise!

A 'surprise' to nobody but you, Neil, since everyone else will
have realized that my remark was a comment upon your behaviour
*here*, and had nothing at all to do with how you may or may not
choose to behave in other circumstances - especially those in which
your words are being published under someone *else's* banner.
In any case, I get quite enough of your unremitting malice towards
Phil Innes here, thank you, without looking for it anywhere else.

At least I can now suffer with Ted Hughes who also can't say what he means.
It also can't be any surprise when this sort of impudent inquiry meets with
no response; was there a sincere inquiry in the first place?

Ø I wouldn't say it rarely happens. I recall a number of Authorship
cranks stopping short of total commitment. Peter Farey, Stephanie
Caruna, Lynne Kositsky, and the various "anyone but Shakespeare" cranks
come to mind.

What an 'orrible statement
I have to be frank:
My dear, VERily,
It's you who's the crank.

Lynne Kositsky

PS -- you think you could manage to make a post which doesn't start off
with a wholesale insult? Give it a try some time -- you might find
that you feel less defensive and paranoid.
