Bacrot doesn't have a big mouth. And Topalov does? Indeed Topalov is a modest person compared to Kramnik who claims to be a WCC although he is not a legal one. By the way, a lot of people seem irritated. Who? I wonder why EZoto is so irritated ? I suppose it`s because of the inevitable process of aging. |

Kramnik still is the legal world champion, because he won a championship match againist the then World Champion Kasparov. The legal challenger to Kasparov was Shirov who defeated Kramnik in a qualifying match. You're really saying that Kramnik was an illegal challenger. However, Kasparov owned the title, he asked Kramnik to play the match, so Kramnik still was a legal challenger. One may wonder if he was if he deserved such a break. Definitely not. He got super lucky, like nobody else, to play a championship match without beating other challengers in a face to face competition against them. However one may argue that he was deserving the chance despite some counter-indications. Indeed, he was the second rated chessplayer for a longer time than anybody else during those years (I think that I am right, but at least I am not too much off). Also, Kramnik justified the championship match by winning it! He's the only player who won a match against Kasparov. Moreover, I think that nobody else had a chance, that Kasparov would beat everybody else, especially Shirov. The problem is not about the legality. The sad state of affairs was that Kramnik was not a true world champion. He never dominated Anand. He lost several matches, actually all of them but against Kasparov. He was very passive. He was not gracious toward Kasparov, who always was nice to Kramnik. And first of all, Kramnik quite stupidly has avoided the rematch. He didn't have much to lose. He would make history by agreeing to the rematch (not to mention $$). Chessplayers would think well of Kramnik forever if he played the rematch. Somehow, the chessplayers like Kramnik and Topalov don't learn the history lessons, they are too preoccupied with the short term goals. I am not hard on Kramnik for his last couple of years. His health clearly suffers, so I am sorry for him. With the single exception of Kasparov, Kramnik is still perhaps the most talented chessplayer--well, Anand was not bad either, except for missing the fighting qualities. If the USSR didn't collapse already when Kramnik was still young, Kramnik would be serious about chess, he would be a chess monster. Instead, our good looking youngster went to play in the German chess league, where he enjoyed life more intensively than chess. Perhaps he made a good trade-off, while it was not good for his chess or for the Chess in general. *********** Wlod |
