There may have been a somewhat similar situation in the 1997 FIDE World Championship. The records I have say that along with all the 2700+ and 2600+ GMs was a Russian named Umgayev, rated then only 2000. How the heck did he get in? The difference now is that the FIDE event was a knockout, while the US Ch is not (IIRC). Umgayev was immediately knocked out by Bologan, but the Class-B Ms. Cottrell will have to endure more punishment. |
