Why did Petrosian play 17 ... Kf8? Was he just messing with Bobby's
head, or did he touch the King and have to move? Has anyone read
anything about it?

GK in "My Great Predecessors, V5" and Wade/O'Connell
in "The Games of Robert J. Fischer" both say White has
a strong attack if: 17. ... 0-0 18. f4 and 19. g4; and Petrosian
commented he didn't see a defense. 17. ... Kf8 certainly looks worse
than 17. ... 0-0 to me.

Fritz 9 doesn't see any really good moves for Black; it gives
17. ... Qc7 18. f4 0-0 or the transposition 17. ... 0-0 f4
18. Qc7 as best. (+/=, +0.38)

Wish I had saved my copies of Chess Life (Chess Lives?) from that era
to get other comments for you.

Fischer had that kind of affect on his opponents!

Regards,
John

Ego Varnuzs says:

17...Kf8? (Better is 17...a5 [17...0-0 18.f4!])

(Die Caro-Kann Verteidigung, p. 115)

Albert Becker says:

17...Kf8 (It is not better 17...0-0 18.f4!)

(El match del Siglo - 1970, p. 15)

I have all issues of Chess Life & Review for 1970. Checking the
annual index, it seems that particular game is not shown. The only game
between F & P published in CL&R that year was from the Rovinj-Zagreb
tournament, a 44-move draw.
