Default Right opponent at my ELO level

I am a Blitz 1355 on the playchess.com server. Yeas I know is pretty
slow! But I wonder if to get better I should be practicing against
other player at my level till I can beat them on a regular basis or I
should playing against others stronger than me only? Any recommended
ELO range like 1300-1400 or something like that?

I think the self righteous advice is something like if you want to improve
you shouldn't be playing Blitz at all. I'm not sure how much you improve by
actually playing Blitz. The idea that you need to do drills makes sense to
me. Baseball, soccer whatever, these players practise by doing drills, and
then, in the case of soccer, there may be a recreational kick about at the
end.

If he wants to improve at playing blitz, aovoiding blitz would be
strange advice! He didn't ask how to improve at normal time controls.

:-)

All I'm saying is that playing a game, any game(?) is not necessarily the
best way of improving at that game. Professional sportsplayers do drills. To
get better at blitz it might well be an idea to practise tactical positions,
eg with CT-Art. If you play through the simple 10 and 20 point tactics on
CT-Art you see more opportunities in your games. You begin to realise that
defended pieces might not actually be that well defended after all, you see
more forks and pins etc. Like I said you don't necessarily get this (as
quickly) from playing games.

That said I remember reading Mig saying when he noplayed players 50 points
below him his grade improved which I think is more along the lines of what
the OP was asking.

Also when I was at that level the best advice I got was 'stop hanging pieces
you moron'. That got me from 1500 to 1550 at ICC in no time.

cheers

Hehe. I'm still working on that phase. I don't hang Queens, Rooks,
Bishops, or Knights anymore... but I still hang or miss a pawn once or
twice per game. The CT-ART 10-pointers helped me--that's good advice.

Playing people of approximately your rating is a good idea.

There's no reason to only play people stronger than you. Furthermore,
honestly, the difference between people 50 points weaker than you and
people 50 points stronger than you isn't so meaningful that you should
seek to play the later and avoid the former.

You want to play games where you have to play well to win. That means
playing in your ball park, ratingwise.

There's something really lame about playing only people higher rated
than yourself. It's selfish. If everybody adopted that attitude, who
would we all play? The truth is that if you aren't playing well, a
player 50 or 100 points weaker than you will wipe the floor with you.

It would be great you get exact ratings of what you play.
