Default Pawn to King 4

Hi,

I've been playing chess off and on for the last 30 years- don't really get
much of a chance to play. Most of my friends are into X-boxs or computer
games.

My favourite opening is the old pawn to king 4. Recently I've met another
player who (as white)does pawn to queen 4. I usually counter that with pawn
to king bishop 4. or just pawn to king 3- followed by a development of the
queen's pawn.

My question is - is there a good easy to follow book for chess openings?
Which would you recommend?

Cheers!

You could try Reuben Fine's `The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings'.
The important thing is to understand the ideas, rather than memorize
the individual moves.

I do not know what would be a "must-have classic",
and I suspect that, in this subject, there is no such
thing. Probably the closest is:

If there is a Barnes and Noble bookstore near you,
you might be able to find Chess, Tactics and Strategy
by Graham Burgess in the discount section. It is
not a book about openings, but it does have a
substantial section on openings - about 170 pages,
along with material on other subjects. The book
is over 500 pages and the discount price is about
$8. (The original title was: The Mammoth Book
of Chess.)

Some of the old links no longer work. Here is an attempt
