In game 5 of the 1921 Lasker - Capablanca match in Havana,
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1241495 Capablanca commented after black's (Lasker's) last move, "It will be noticed that it was Dr. Lasker's forty-fifth move. He had very little time to think..." This does not make any sense. The times for this game, as given twice in Capablanca's book on the match we Capablanca (white) 2 hours 55 minutes Lasker (black) 2 hours 25 minutes. The time limit was 15 moves an hour, so move 45 was indeed a time control move, but Lasker had more than 15 minutes to think about it. I can understand Capablanca's memory being at fault - but the figures are there in the book for him to see. Was Capablanca giving his opponent an excuse, perhaps? .uk... Capablanca (white) 2 hours 55 minutes Lasker (black) 2 hours 25 minutes. Apologies... Lasker's time was 2 hours 45 minutes. A typo. |

I have a Dover reprint of the match book (autographed by Aivars Gipslis, of all people), and I see the same puzzling comment. Firstly, I wouldn't be too sure that "the figures were there in the book for him to see" when Capa was writing his notes. Also, the times for each game may have been added afterwards. I wonder if perhaps the times got reversed by the printer, so that actually Lasker had 5 minutes, not 15, for move 45. Even so, five minutes for one move is not usually considered serious time pressure. |
