I hadn't even heard this match was in the works, but if comes off, I
predict Topolov will win. The only Kramnik match I know upcoming is his match against Deep Fritz in November-December, I'd put a small amount on the computer. Wilma Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Kramnik have a very good plus score against Topalov? Granted that may mean nothing in a match but Kramnik has match experience while Topalov I think has none. I feel Kramnik is a clear favorite. Anand or Shirov would have been a better match in my opinion. EZoto |

I have the impression that Kramnik is out of shape while Topolov is at the
top of his game. Moreover, Topolov pulls wins out of drawn games, tending to play a game through to a conclusion that other GMs would draw. Topolov's fighting spirit and his performance in the last two tears prompts me to give him a slight nod. I wouldn't place much money on it though. I think Kamsky's performance so far has been more impressive. I think if Kamsky got a shot at Topalov or Kramnik I believe he would beat them both. EZoto |

Could be, but it seems to me that Kamsky is showing weaknesses, especially
in the opening, that players who've remained active don't show. I'd love to see Kamsky or some other United States citizen rise to the very top. Alas, I don't think it is to be. I'd love to see Kamsky or some other United States citizen rise to the very top. Alas, I don't think it is to be. Wilma Kamsky has shown great improvement this year.He started out playing at the Marshall clubs Quick tourneys typically going 3-1 at most of those tourneys.Even at that stage he was not losing but yielded many draws. This year finishing 2nd at the M-Tel Masters (knocking off Anand in the process) seems to indicate he can compete at the highest level.I think Kamsky can overcome the major openings weaknesses he has.He has done well despite his weakness by winning the Mayors Cup,the World Open, holding his own on Board 1 in the Olympiad. It seems his father is no longer in the picture getting in the way of his progress. Now do I think he could win vs Topalov or Krammnik.Tough question.Topalov did beat him twice at the M-Tel Masters.Who knows what kind of form Kramnik is in.I suspect at this point Kamsky would fare better vs Kramnik as opposed to Topalov. My main question is still will Topalov and Kramnik still play? |

Statistics from chessgames.com Overall: Kramnik +19 -9 =34 (58%) Since 2000: Kramnik +8 -5 =11 (60%) That includes various rapidplay and blindfold games. I can't be bothered to filter them out because chessgames.com makes this rather difficult. (For example, the Melody Amber tournament is often just listed as `Monaco' and half the tournaments in the world just appear as `IT'.) Thanks, Wlod. I thought 60% looked high but my brain was convinced that +8-5=11 was 14.5/24 (it's actually 13.5).
