Hi all, do you think u can really improve your chess by playing often
on internet?
It is best to read books, chess articles with a board in front of you
isn't it?

improvement = (hours games played * hours studies) / (hours games played
+ hours studies)

For a given number of hours (h) spent studying (s) and playing (p) then
h=s+p and improvement I = (s*p)/(s+p). This has a maximum when s=p.

So this is saying that study and play time should be equal for maximum
improvement.

Is this true?

Of course there is no single, simple answer, but what I've read
indicates that at low ratings, play probably is more important, and at
high ratings, study might be more important.

When I first learned how to play chess, I had a simple chess program
that had 5 difficulty levels. It also showed me where I could and
couldn't move pieces. After awhile I was able to bet it on hard.
Granted it was a simple program. I had a friend that came over a lot
and started playing chess. I used to beat him pretty fast at first.
As we played, I'd tell him if he was making a wrong move and why.
Before long, we were about the same playing level. If one of us was
about to make a bad move, we'd tell each other why. That helped both
our games a lot. Our games takes us around 1-2 hours to finish now.
As for playing on the net, I don't like too. Everyone wants you to
rush your moves and that can cause you to make many mistakes you'd not
normally make.
