I have the greatest respect for Dan, but I think this story is a hoax.
Who would put up $15 million to sponsor a match of gothic chess, where Fischer was a participant? What will the sponsors receive in return? The Fischer factor aside, who will be interested in this contest? As a chess player, I am not very interested in variants except perhaps for Fischer Random. I've never even played over a F-R game though. Supposedly the prize fund will be between $10 million and $15 million, plus for some reason the organizers must rent *all* the rooms in the hotel for the duration of the match, so you can throw in another few million. Plus the organization. I'll go out on a limb: this match will never happen. If it does it will be a huge dud. adp wrote in message oups.com... There will be a live announcement about FISCHER-KARPOV by guest Ed Trice on my "Ask the Renaissance Show" Thursday Oct 12 at 9-10 PM. Due to the special nature of this announcement, the ICC is making this show available to EVERYONE, and not just ICC members (i.e., "Guests" can listen this week). To listen to the show go to www.chess.fm and click on the Dan Heisman show. Ed Trice is the inventor of Gothic Chess. Fischer will back out thus the fairly premature announcement since all the details have not been worked out. So they get all the publicity now and will deal with any fallout if/when Fischer backs out. Which shouldn't be too much since people know how totally irrational Fischer is now. |

Supposedly there is to be a Fischer-Karpov match, but not in standard chess, instead in a variant called Gothic Chess, which is similar to the game Capablanca designed about 80 years ago, with two extra pieces (R+N and B+N) and an 8x10 board. Some news about pre-match organization can be read he http://www.gothicchess.com/news.html Whether it will actually come off, I don't know. I do somewhat know Frank Camaratta, who is to supply the set for the match, and I doubt he would be knowingly involved in any hoax. |

I wonder why a third piece, one which combines R+N+B, wasn't added to the mix. |

I wonder why a third piece, one which combines R+N+B, wasn't added to the mix. A Q+N combination, in effect? Perhaps it was considered too powerful. Back when I was a kid, I tried devising some chess variants. One had a piece which moved like a rook, except that it was allowed to go one square diagonally at any point, at the start or end of its move, or in the midst of its orthogonal move. If the diagonal move was within or at the start of its orthogonal move, it could then continue orthogonally in any direction, east, west, north or south -- a rook that could turn corners and change lanes, so to speak. I thought this was pretty cool until I realized that on an empty board, such a piece could move to any square at all. |
