Default FICS: Anyone having trouble logging on??

I wonder if anyone else is having trouble logging on to FICS?

http://www.freechess.org/

I have tried simply accessing the site from home, work, and two public
libraries: I simply get an error screen.

From the FireFox browser, this is what it says:

===

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
www.freechess.org.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try
again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's
network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or
proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

===

So, I'm not even getting to the log-on screen. It has been this way
for almost two days.

Perhaps it is regional? I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, California,
USA.

Any guess as to what's going on here?

Thanks in advance for any help you might have.

Yes, it happens from time to time. Just wait and log in some time later.

It's a relief to know that it's not just (our) local areas.

Thanks for posting the question, now more of us know and will be
patient about it.

Thanks both!

It's almost been a week here, and I've been unable to log on to FICS:

http://www.freechess.org/

I wonder if anyone out there CAN log on or even access the main page?

Thanks!

The web server seems to be down or not accessible. But the telnet-server
is working. This means with client programs it should be possible to
access it to play etc.

Greetings,
Ralf

Thanks, Ralf! I'm afraid I don't know how to use the telnet server,
but I'll take your word for it. I'm just glad to know that they are
not irretrievably down. They do a great service to the Chess
community, in my humble opinion.

For what it's worth, one friend suggested that I clear my DNS cache and
then retry accessing the site. So I did this, using the following
command from the MS-DOS prompt:

ipconfig /flushdns

The DNS cache was successfully cleared, but this didn't enable me to
access http://www.FreeChess.org/ in the conventional way.

Incidentally, for those who might wish to clear their DNS cache, the
MS-DOS prompt is usually called up on an MS-Windows PC by clicking the
"Start" button in the lower left corner, clicking "Programs," then
"Accessories," then "Command Prompt." You can then enter the command
to clear the DNS cache. You might wish to view the cache before you do
this using the following command, but be forewarned -- your MS-DOS
window might be scrolling for some time before it is finished
displaying everything!

ipconfig /displaydns

If you then "flush" or clear the DNS cache using the earlier-mentioned
command for this purpose, viewing the cache afterward should result in
minimal scrolling.

Thanks again to all who have responded. I hope FICS will be up and
running in the usual way soon....

OK, the web server's down. Go to

http://www.babaschess.net/

and download their program. It's supposed to be easy to use and
should, as I recall, let you connect to FICS without needing any
configuration. If it does need configuration, the server name is
`freechess.org' (with *no* www) and the pot number is 5000.

Then you can play to your heart's content!

Thank you for the tip, Dave! I'll try it when I get a chance.

P.S. I generally go by my middle name "Brett" on the Web, but my
day-to-day name is quite similar to yours: David B. Richardson here.
(Sometimes people spell it "Richerson," which is a fairly common name,
it just happens not to be mine.)

Thanks again.

Hi again, Dave:

BabasChess did indeed work right out of the box! No configuration was
needed. (Of course, this may not be true on all systems.)

It looks like quite an impressive program!

Thanks again....
