I don't know what your problem is, but I was playing on FICS just the
other day from way overseas.

Operator error, perhaps?

I read that some systems are down, ie new passwords $ email but if you
already have user name and password, you can log on.

I think its been on and off, mostly off.

Anyone desperate for a game can play at the Convekta-supported site at
Chessville - either as flash-play [no download] or by download, which is
quicker and has a few more features. Both free.

But don't play Rybka! Its not like Sanny's engine, its rated 3006.

I say that you must have graduated from the Carrot Ironfounderson School
of Creative Writing. Based on the quality of your fiction.

FICS has been down for weeks.

No, it has not. I just logged in with the Winboard and FICS is OK.

Ah, you probably mean this news item:
'FICS is currently experiencing hardware problems, which have blocked
our Web page, the registration system and our email system. This also
means that we are unable to issue new passwords. However, if you have
password problems connecting with Jin (the main Web interface), it is
probably not due to a forgotten password, so please download, install
and connect with another GUI (Graphical User Interface)...
'

Well, have you tried something else than Jin? No, I guess not.

ICC is still going
strong.

Good for them.

Yes, don't be cheap, and spring for the measly $50. or so per year, on ICC.

I have been playing on FICS every day with no trouble using Inemisis. I
just got done playing two games a minute ago.

Yeah. Don't be so cheap!

After you've paid your $50.00 to the USCF, bought the set & clock "Big
Knight" combo for $59.95 so you could play in your first tournament,
then had to shell out the $15.00 in state association dues (assuming
you DON'T live in Illinois), drove to your tournament (paying for gas &
snacks along the way), stayed overnight for the two-day event (paying
for a hotel), and drove home after leaving the tournament empty handed,
you're SURE to have a "measly $50" just laying around so you can PAY to
play chess on the internet.

Sheesh.

Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?

Check that you're using the server `freechess.org', *not*
`www.freechess.org'. Usually, they're equivalent but, at the moment,
the first one is working and the second isn't.
