FICS isn't dead. Download an interface from, e.g.,
http://www.babaschess.net/ and you'll be able to connect just fine.

gameknot.com. I've been using it free for years. I've only used 1 other site
so I'm not sure how it compares to others but it was 100% better than that
other site. If you decide to join the fees are rediculously low.

I played at www.caissa.com for years - you can pay or not - if you don't pay
your 'handle' lasts only a month, then you can renew it with a new handle.
But you can still capture your games, and print them even with guest
membership. You can also watch other games in play with guest-membership,
and their is a chat/kibbitz line.

Chessville has a free flash-play site, or a free downloadable version. I
think there are 4 or 5 other good free sites, but people here might not know
what to recommend to you depending on your choice of playing level, or how
fast you like to play?

FICS is up and running but it seems kinda empty. If you look on the
search graph there are not any dots. You can get into a game if you
click "Quick Game" or issue a seek.

BabasChess is the best free online chess interface around. I wish they
would make a native linux version.

For other free chess you can try US Chess Live at
http://www.uschesslive.org

You can keep a name and play unlimited games but you have no rating...
for me that's even better since it's one less thing to worry about.
